Cursor Reset, All Chats and Settings Gone

All chats are listed, They don’t load
IDE Layout Settings - GONE!
Command Allow List - GONE!
MCP Allow List - GONE!
MCP Authorizations - Gone!
Auto-Approved Mode Transitions - GONE!
File Delete Protection - TURNED OFF!

Steps to Reproduce

Open Cursor, It asks to Login, After login everything is reset!

Expected Behavior

Open Cursor and all my settings are present

This has happened before, This is an ongoing issue that has happened several times before.

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. This looks like a known bug related to a forced re-login. Unfortunately, once it happens, the lost data usually can’t be restored.

If you have backups of these folders, you can try restoring them:

  • %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage\state.vscdb
  • %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\workspaceStorage

To do that, close Cursor and replace the current files with the backups.

To figure out what’s triggering it in your case:

  • How much free disk space do you have?
  • Did this happen after a Cursor update?
  • Do you see any pattern, like after a long idle time or when working on specific projects?

For the future, I’d recommend exporting important chats from time to time (via the chat menu) and backing up the folders above.

This known bug related to a forced re-login has been present for a VERY LONG TIME! It’s very unfortunate the Cursor team can’t (or wont) fix it!
