Cursor update bug

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I am running Linux, but tried the windows installer from the website too, and it’s still downloading the 3.22.12 version but the IDE has been prompting for an update, and the release notes were on October 6 and 3.23.23 doesn’t download using apt

Steps to Reproduce

Download the latest IDE version from the website or trying to update via cmd

Expected Behavior

Get the latest stable version

Operating System

Linux

Version Information

cursor --version
3.22.12
3a92974361033b2051526321308c2740fe5912c0
x64

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. There are two different things here.

  1. Website. You’re right, the platform links on cursor.com/download still point to 3.22.12 right now, even though the current stable version is 3.23.23. This isn’t something in your setup. I’ve passed it to the team. For now, here are the direct links for 3.23.23:
  • Linux .deb x64: https://api2.cursor.sh/updates/download/golden/linux-x64-deb/cursor/3.23
  • Windows x64, user installer: https://api2.cursor.sh/updates/download/golden/win32-x64-user/cursor/3.23
  1. apt. Version 3.23.23 is already in our apt repo, so if apt still says 3.22.12 is the newest, that means apt on your machine isn’t refreshing from our repo. Could you send the output of these commands:
sudo apt-get update 2>&1 | grep -i cursor
apt-cache policy cursor
ls -l /usr/share/keyrings/anysphere.gpg
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cursor.*

If the first command shows an error like NO_PUBKEY or is not signed, the signing key probably got removed. You can reinstall it like this:

curl -fsSL https://downloads.cursor.com/keys/anysphere.asc | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/anysphere.gpg > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade cursor

Let me know what the output shows. If it isn’t the key, we can keep digging.

Hi Cursor Team,

My Cursor IDE is showing a notification that an update to version 3.23.23 is available. However, when I visit the website, I’m unable to find the latest .deb file for this version.

I also tried updating Cursor using the APT command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade cursor

But it shows:

cursor is already the newest version (3.22.12-1790400601).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 414 not upgraded.

So, I’m currently on version 3.22.12, while Cursor is notifying me that 3.23.23 is available.

Could you please help me understand why the update notification is showing a newer version when the APT repository still considers 3.22.12 to be the latest version? Also, please let me know how I can safely update to version 3.23.23 on Ubuntu.

Thank you.

Hey, right, stable has moved on since then, so it’s better not to tie it to a specific version number. To always pull the latest stable build directly, use the latest link instead of a version number x64. For ARM, replace it with linux-arm64-deb:

https://api2.cursor.sh/updates/download/golden/linux-x64-deb/cursor/latest

For apt, you also don’t need to specify a version. It’ll fetch the current stable on its own:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade cursor

If apt still shows an older version as the newest, send the output and we’ll check what’s going on with the repo on the machine:

apt-cache policy cursor
sudo apt-get update 2>&1 | grep -i cursor
ls -l /usr/share/keyrings/anysphere.gpg

Two common cases:

  • If apt-get update shows NO_PUBKEY or is not signed, the signing key is likely missing:
curl -fsSL https://downloads.cursor.com/keys/anysphere.asc | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/anysphere.gpg > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade cursor
  • If there’s no downloads.cursor.com/aptrepo line in apt-cache policy cursor, the Cursor repo isn’t connected. Install the latest .deb from the latest link above and answer Yes when it asks to add the repository, so future updates come through apt.

If the download page itself is showing an outdated version, that’s on their side, not yours. Let me know if it still doesn’t update after using latest.

Hey, quick update: the download page at cursor.com/download is serving the current stable version again on all platforms, so a fresh download from there should now give the latest version, not 3.22.12. This was on the website side, not in your setup.

If apt is still keeping you on the old version, that’s a separate repo issue on that specific machine. Send the output and we can take a look:

apt-cache policy cursor
sudo apt-get update 2>&1 | grep -i cursor
ls -l /usr/share/keyrings/anysphere.gpg

Two common cases:

  • If apt-get update shows NO_PUBKEY or is not signed, the signing key is probably missing:
curl -fsSL https://downloads.cursor.com/keys/anysphere.asc | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/anysphere.gpg > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade cursor
  • If apt-cache policy cursor does not show a line with downloads.cursor.com/aptrepo, the Cursor repo just is not connected. Install the fresh .deb from the latest link and answer Yes when it asks to add the repo, so future updates come through apt:
https://api2.cursor.sh/updates/download/golden/linux-x64-deb/cursor/latest

Let me know how it goes.
