Cursor wiped out my entire laptop

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I was using Cursor like in any other day, when I realized it completely deleted not only teh directory it was working on (created a new empty one), but also MY ENTIRE LAPTOP?!

SERIOUSLY, even OS programs and files, all my personal files. EVERYTHING IS GONE!

I’m on to the 2nd day troubleshooting, but all diagnosis are leading to a complete wipe out. Everything is gone?

How da hell does this happen? Was a small feature implementation in a new chat. No reason for this to happen.

In the week where ai just hit 200€ of api spending now I have thousands in losses? This is really serious

It even deleted apps, including Cursor! Wtf is this

Steps to Reproduce

No clue. When I realized it wqs too late. Restore checkpoint did absolutely nothing

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Current Cursor Version (Menu → About Cursor → Copy)

I CANT ACCESS CURSOR BECAUSE IT WIPED ITSELF

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Claude Sonnet 4

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

hi @Miguel_Costa and thank you for the bug report. I’m sorry to hear about your issue with Agent.

From what you describe can it be that you used Agent with Auto-run mode?

We do have settings that allow user to confirm each action or have specific settings set to prevent many of such issues. By using Auto-run it is possible that AI tries actions which may be irreversible. Therefore it is recommended to run it in an isolated environment like in a Virtual Machine or a computer that may be easily restored. Best would be running it in Background Agent as it does not have access to your local machine. For all computer usage it is best practice to have external and offsite (cloud) backups to prevent lasting issues with such an AI mistake.

I hope you had external and/or offsite backups for your data and your Windows installation and that you will be able to restore it.

Hey, you can set “auto-run in sandbox” so all your commands run there automatically and ask for confirmation outside the sandbox.

I’m still in the recovery battle but isn’t looking great. The worst part is that I have a 200$ bill to pay on Cursor - in the month that it wiped out my laptop…

I know I’m not the only case like this in the past month or so. There’s something wrong with the app and I can’t take all the blame.

I’d learn the lesson in a more subtle way. I didnt need my whole laptop wiped out
