Bug? that deleted all my files from macbook

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

So last saturday i was using cursor just like always and i had the ai agent doing some changes to my mobile app project and while it was running i was in the browser playing chess. then suddenly there comes a popup from cursor asking to access something related to facetime then download folder, document folder and so on almost 10 popups. I mostly clicked allow because i thought it had something to do with the new update which was 1.6.35 and that i had just few hours ago updated. Well after the chess game i went back to cursor and tried to write in the chat but it says like couldn’t establish a connection etc and then i just minimize it and see that all my folders from the desktop are gone. then i close cursor and restart macbook and it quickly flashes pink screen before closing. and after restart i realized that all cursor chats and other projects are gone and mostly the whole app project and also all my downloads, documents etc are gone. I have tried to deeply search trough the system but could not find the files. i also contacted apple and screenshared my macbook and they tried to find the files but could not and said that it could have something to do with cursor. also i didnt have any time machine or cloud backup for my files and downloads etc… :frowning: I sent email about this to hi cursor last sunday and got few ai replies but after that i have been just waiting for a new reply. I am hoping that the support would find some answers from my account logs and other info so we could know what really happened and if the important files are still able to be recovered.

Steps to Reproduce

I dont remember exactly what i asked the agent to do but hopefully the logs will tell. But at some point i just got many popups asking for permission to different folders and apps.

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Sonnet 4

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, I’m really sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately, it’s hard to determine exactly what went wrong. If, as you mentioned, you were granting Cursor permissions without much caution, it’s possible that at that moment the agent was already deleting your Downloads and Documents folders.

If the directories were indeed deleted by the agent, they unfortunately cannot be restored unless you had a backup.

The key question is why the agent needed to do this. Could you recall what task you were working on and which application you were using at the time? It’s possible the agent was searching for dependencies and, not finding them in the project, started looking in your home directory and deleting along the way.

Could you also let me know which model you were using?

Hi, and i really cant remember but it could have been something to do with updating some dependencies or installing some new ones. I think in that session i updated react native and tailwind ccs and nativewind and expo sdk to work better on ios 26 and also did some design changes trough agent to the app project. But i dont know what was the last task the agent was doing. I hope some logs could give info on what really happened. also i was using sonnet 4 the whole time.
