Detached Agent window: prompt input lag, paste fails, text invisible/misaligned

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Detached Agent window: prompt input becomes extremely laggy; typed/pasted text often fails to appear, jumps, or becomes invisible.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Cursor with a workspace.
  2. Open two Agent chat tabs.
  3. Drag one tab out to create a separate/detached window.
  4. Focus the prompt input in the detached window.
  5. Type text and try pasting longer text (Ctrl+V).

Expected Behavior

The detached window prompt should work like the main window: smooth typing, reliable paste, and correct text rendering/positioning.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

For AI issues: which model did you use?

N/A — UI/editor bug (Agent prompt input), not model-specific. Observed with Agent/Auto mode.

Additional Information

  • In the detached window, the prompt area sometimes looks abnormally tall / layout-broken compared to the main Agents window.
  • Main window prompt works normally; issue mainly appears in the floating/detached window.
  • Symptoms: severe input lag/stutter, paste sometimes does nothing, typed characters may not show or appear shifted/misaligned.
  • Workaround: use the prompt only in the main Cursor window (avoid detached Agent window).

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the detailed report. This is a known issue we’re tracking. When the Agent tab is detached into a separate window, the prompt input can lose the caret position. That can cause lag, invisible or shifted text, and Ctrl+V not working. Keeping the prompt in the main window is the right workaround for now.

A couple more things that have helped other users:

  1. Close the Agent panel chat in the main Cursor window so the chat is only open in the detached window. A few users said the input in the detached window starts working normally once the chat in the main window is closed.
  2. If it still breaks, in the detached window press Ctrl+Shift+P and run Developer: Reload Window. This resets the input, but it may break again after the next response.

Two questions so I can pass accurate details to the team:

  1. What Cursor version are you on? Cursor menu > Help > About > Copy, then paste it here. The ID in your post is not the version.
  2. Does the lag and the stretched prompt go away if you close the chat in the main window step 1? A short screen recording showing the stretched or broken prompt would also help a lot.

I can’t share a timeline yet, but I’ll post here if there’s an update.
