"False connection error in chat - works fine in new chat window but 'Try again' button never recovers"

During active chat sessions, Cursor sometimes displays a “Connection failed. If the problem persists, please check your internet connection or VPN” error message. However, my internet connection is working perfectly fine - all other applications and websites work normally. The “Try again” button consistently fails and never recovers the session, even though starting a new chat window immediately works without any issues.

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Explain how to reproduce the bug (if known)

This appears to happen randomly during longer chat sessions. The exact trigger is unclear, but it seems to be related to session state rather than actual connectivity issues since:

  • New chat windows work immediately

  • All other internet-dependent applications work fine

  • The “Try again” button never succeeds, suggesting it’s not actually retrying properly

:prohibited: Tell us if the issue stops you from using Cursor.

This is quite disruptive as it requires starting a new chat and losing conversation context.

Additional Context:

The error message suggests checking VPN/connection, but this appears to be a false positive since the issue is immediately resolved by opening a new chat window. This suggests the problem is with session management or connection state handling rather than actual network connectivity.

Hello? This keeps happening! What gives?

Hey, try this solution and let me know if it doesn’t help you.

Where do I add this? What config file?

If you’re on macOS, you need to add this to the System Preferences.

DOesn’t work !
Connection failed. If the problem persists, please check your internet connection or VPN

Fix please.

Hello, deanrie. I have the same error here. Can you have a look at this? It seems has a 30s timeout for generating code
