Frustrated with Cursor’s Token Hungriness

It’s absolutely infuriating :face_with_steam_from_nose: to see how Cursor has suddenly changed its billing system from last month to this month. Last month, I used Claude 4 Sonnet heavily, and my credit limit still lasted until the end of the month. But now, with barely any usage, it’s exhausted in just 10 days. I have no idea how simple tasks are suddenly consuming nearly 100K tokens each time.

Now I’m stuck with only Auto mode—which can’t even handle basic form generation. I can’t access Claude 4, Claude 3.5, or any GPT models anymore. It keeps telling me my limit is reached. But compared to last month, I’ve barely touched Cursor this time.

If I had really used Claude 4 and GPT that much, I should at least be able to use the other models. Clearly, they’ve changed their billing and pricing rules right after my renewal. So how can new rules apply to an existing plan I already paid for?

This is beyond disappointing—I trusted this platform, and now it feels like a bait-and-switch. I think it’s time to seriously consider better alternatives like Windsurf or Trae AI.

Completely agree. I see the same. In the beginning I could use $50 in a month coding all the time. This month (only on the 15) I am on $220..

If you're using Claude Sonnet 4 via Cursor AI, you're probably paying 20% more than you need to

Hey, I’m sorry to hear you are unhappy with our recent pricing plan changes. While we still believe this to be the right decision for the majority of users, a few users have anecdotally seen worse usage this month than the previous month.

One thing I would like to point out here is how much usage you actually get as part of your plan!

@Arunkumar_K Checking your account, you have accrued >$150 worth of model usage, which has all been accounted for under your Pro plan!

@hoyer1989 For you on Pro+, you have used over $250 worth of usage this month before hitting your limits.

By introducing this new pricing structure, we hope to be able to continue offering great usage for users on every plan, only possibly by our unique deals and agreements with the model providers available in Cursor.

We want our users to feel the value of Cursor is worth the cost, and to have trust in us to do right by them, and I sincerely apologise if we have fallen short of that with our recent changes.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to send them over.

So what happened to the ‘unlimited’ part of the plan?, You guys randomly changed it to ‘extended limits’ recently.

I also have used “$80” dollars worth of my ‘unlimited’ usage this month, Pretty heavy i suppose, but not nearly as much compared to a lot of others.

Early in the month it felt pretty smooth sailing, but then it felt like i hit a brick wall. I get one prompt which unknowinlgy to me reaches 1.5 million tokens for a simple question – that i get to do once every 4 days before reaching my ‘limit’ again on my ‘unlimited’ plan. Make it make sense. feels like bait and switch.

The issue is the amount of tokens being used.

I’ve spent a few days coding and have used up apparently $130+ dollars of API calls? Simple tasks take up millions of tokens out of nowhere. At this point I spend more time crafting my prompts to make sure I don’t eat up an absurd amount of tokens in a single request then I do coding.

Also, is it true sonnets API charges are upticked by 20%?

I just ran out of credits, suddenly, and we are at 16, i really really would have loved to know in advance about the limit so I can control it better, now I have still two weeks ahead of what to do

Thanks to the changes in Cursor, I got to see how great other tools are. Claude Code saved me

My billing cycle is nearly over, so not the end of the world… but I never even got a rate limit I just got changed over to usage based. This seems at odds with how I understood the ultra plan pricing works. I have a CC pro subscription that I will just switch to as 25 cents for a non max mode call is crazy.

it’s also insane how many more tokens cursor burns than Claude code on sonnet 4. I just paid 18 cents for sonnet to make 24 changes to code. that was in the time I could realize my reloaded cursor window was running a command lol.

It’s unbelievable. Just a day ago I got got message that if I continued that way I would hit usage limit on 26th. Today I haven’t even used it that much, suddenly it says limit would hit on 18th. Literally a couple requests later it now says limit reached. That’s with Pro+.

There is no way this isn’t bugged and must be fixed! And I still cannot make sense of anything. 675 Sonnet 4 requests are supposedly included in Pro+. What does that even mean? There is no way I have sent 675 requests. Not even 200 probably, and while some might have been with Sonnet 4 Thinking (2x requests?), there is still no way I got to 675.

But what does requests even mean? I see none of that in the dashboard. How is it so hard to make it transparent? I feel absolutely ripped off at the moment.

I’m the same way. I am on ultra and I fixed a few bugs over the course of 2 days and my API charges are over $130. There’s no way this is legit. I cancelled.

We should probably sue them. This can’t be legal.

I want to cancel the annual subscription. It would be great if I can get a refund for the remaining months. I have already started paying for Trae AI and trying other genmini cli and claude code. I thought one was enough, but it turned out to be totally insufficient. I am poor and don’t have that much money. This is a really bad experience.

@danperks can you give us some insight on this? 2 code edits performed in a matter of seconds cost me 18 cents. extrapolating against my daily usage and what I was being charged prior to switching to ultra, that makes no sense at all.

Just cancelled not paying $200 for auto models

if I dont make it to day 28 of my next billing period, I probably will as well

Why’d you unlist the thread, bro? Forums usually blow up with flags or replies when sh*t goes sideways, this one just vanished in silence. No pings, no drama, just stealth-mode. :joy: Man, I’ve been breaking forums since the ‘90s, you think I don’t notice when something shady goes down?

Bad for business, innit?

Pretty sure I tripped some invisible wire, but I need to know exactly what triggered Cursor’s BS ToS filter. Can’t fix what I “broke” if no one tells me what it was.
