Gemini 2.5 Pro's Poor Tool Application and Reliability Issues in Cursor

Describe the Bug

Alright, I’ve got to say it: Gemini 2.5 Pro is proving to be absolute trash in terms of reliability when it comes to using tools within Cursor. It consistently fails at applying edits, utilising files, and similar tasks. I’m seeing it repeatedly reattempt to use the Cursor agent’s tools, failing time and again, perhaps only eventually succeeding. What’s more, it sometimes even resorts to asking me to manually perform tasks, which defeats the purpose. This really hampers workflow and needs looking into.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Configure Cursor to use Gemini 2.5 Pro as the underlying model for the agent.
  2. Initiate a chat session where the agent is required to perform tasks involving tool usage, such as applying code edits or interacting with files.
  3. Observe the agent’s behaviour:
  • It frequently fails on initial attempts to use tools.
  • It often reattempts the same tool actions multiple times.
  • It may eventually succeed, but only after several failed attempts.
  • In some instances, it will prompt the user to manually complete tasks that should be handled by the agent’s tools.
