Hanging when grepping

Where does the bug appear? Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug Every time a command runs in agent mode that involves searching or scanning files, the agent hangs indefinitely. It appears to freeze on grep operations specifically. I have to manually intervene every single prompt to tell it to use ripgrep or terminal scanning instead. This makes it impossible to let Cursor run autonomously — I have to watch every prompt to catch the hang and redirect it. This started yesterday after roughly two months of using Cursor without this issue. It occurs across all models but is most frequent on Auto.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open any project in Cursor IDE

  2. Start an agent mode session

  3. Give any prompt that causes the agent to search or scan files (e.g. “find all references to X”, “audit this codebase for Y”)

  4. Agent begins a grep operation and hangs indefinitely — no progress, no output, no error

Expected Behavior Agent completes file searches without hanging and continues executing the prompt autonomously.

Operating System Windows 11

Version Information 3.2.21

Model Occurs on all models, most frequently on Auto

Does this stop you from using Cursor? Sometimes — I can use Cursor but must monitor every prompt to catch and manually redirect hangs, eliminating the ability to multitask or run agents autonomously.

Additional Information Workaround: telling the agent to use ripgrep or terminal-based file scanning instead of grep resolves the hang for that specific operation, but the issue recurs on the next grep attempt.

Hi! My Cursor is also Hanging.. Stuck at Taking Longer than expected. I have raised a ticket with any acknowledgement. Is there any major bug. I am stuck.

I just updated Cursor and I think it’s working now. I haven’t tried on auto, but it’s working on Sonnet 4.6 when grepping
