This morning I seemed to be locked up after barely any usage. Then it seemed to ease off, and I looked and the money in the tank wasn’t moving, so I thought we were doing good. Light usage, good execution, I might get used to this. Then later I get on and very shortly it’s saying I have no credit left and I’d need to move to the new higher tier or switch to auto. Lo and behold it had drained my credits. Added more and the costs seems to be just siphoning vs what it was yesterday.
I’m just not sure what to think. If you’re switching to a rate limit, well everyone’s already barking you need to show that better, but as well I don’t understand the handoff between having credits for usage and not, or when you can want to use them vs want to stay in the rates for the moment.
Nothing is very clear, or very evident, and now I’m just burning extra dollars for reason I have no clue about.
I like the idea, please make this better because I am really confused on the implementation.
I again just don’t know how to operate in this new environment. Yesterday I got a lot done and for some reason on occasion it would dip into my funds but for the majority it did not.
Today I get my handful of requests and now for nearly two hours I just get the rate limit message.
I’m not a power user, I’m just a proHobbyist trying to work on some fun projects and I don’t mind putting money in the tank but with your discount on C4 gone it seems to soak at far far higher rate than even a doubling would have done and then when is rate limits on, or off, or fading or burst or .. AIEEEE
I think this is the new push to get people on the Ultra plan. Claude Sonnet 4 (thinking) is very resource intensive, so either they’re rate limiting based on token usage, or something is seriously broken. I’m going with token usage, as changing to another lighter LLM, seems to work for longer.
Just gonna keep updating since I’m now getting paranoid. After :30m it unlocked again and so far I’ve had 7 requests processed. Every time I hit enter though I wonder.. will this be the last. Talk about a rough feeling.
Working for the moment, for reasons I.. still.. don’t.. understand.
edit-- 9 request. I got 9 in before limiting ..woohoo..
3.5h later I still have no new limit. So today, for those counting at home, I got ~12 uses for nearly ~8 hours. I’m not sure how this is acceptable. I’m fine with cooldowns, I’m fine with resets and bursting and whatever vocabulary you want to attach to it, but you have to have some better utility. This plans efficacy just took a nose dive.
And if you’re saying that if I sign up to ultra I get 20x more.. is that per day? At the slow pace that Sonnet4 is now feeding back I guess you could work all day since your time cycle has slowed substantially.. but I’m not terribly comforted by those thoughts.
I dunno, I’ll keep tracking but I’m not feeling right about this interplay.
– edit, just unlocked and I’ve got a token to spend, feel like I need to phrase my work so carefully to make sure I can get as much done in one session as possible now. hah, glad to be worried, 1 request is all I got. Winning..
Yes, I use my 500, and add more money to it, and have used that. The point being is expectation. With Claude Code Pro you get around 9000 lines of code per 5 hours. If Cursor is trying to be similar to these rate limit concepts they need to have more visibility and understanding of how to set a users expectations. I’m fine with overage when it’s needed, but right now I don’t have a clue as to what and when it should be needed. It was pretty cut and dry, and now it’s not. Not only that the tool usage cost even increasing by 1x to 2x from Sonnet 4 costs drained at an alarming rate over previous usage. If was going from .15c per use and now its .70c per use that scaling is not a doubling but a ~trippling. So all of this just creates uncertainty. Do I add more money, if so how much work can I hope to be delivered? Should the rate refill be more friendly or deeper or are these edge cases? I just don’t know.
I can’t operate properly in this situation, and while I will open my wallet when needed I don’t want to do so just to do so, that’s not a good choice–at least not at this time.
You’re not getting truly unlimited mode usage for $200. You’re getting higher rate limits plus the option to pay extra when you exceed those limits. The “unlimited” language is misleading - it should really say “higher limits with usage-based overage.” or something The rate limits are not clear its really a big misstep in community trust IMO. don’t get greedy with intentional misleading marketing
Hey @LordofCandy from checking your usage, looks like your billing cycle is due to reset today, which will reset your limits.
For context, since June 18th (9 days), you used around 1.5X the equivalent 500 requests from the old system, so you’ll have used up your burst rate limit. Then are probably using large context sizes with the thinking model to use up your compute for the local rate limit resets.
This is nuts. I’m on the Ultra Plan, but for the last two days I keep getting “Opus usage limit reached—switch to pay-as-you-go” alerts. A full 24 hours goes by and the meter still hasn’t reset; it just stays maxed out.
That’s nowhere near the “20× usage” the Ultra Plan brags about. Even ClaudeCode MAX refreshes every five hours. I really like Cursor—I shelled out 200 bucks for the top-tier plan just so I could use Opus—but now the quota never resets. It’s beyond frustrating.
I can’t even find anything in the official docs about when the quota resets—or what the cap actually is. Everything’s opaque. I’m willing to pay for higher usage, but instead I’m stuck with these hidden limits. It’s maddening.
I paid for the top-tier plan but still can’t access the best model. I might as well have stayed on Pro—why shell out ten times the price if I’m still stuck with Claude-sonnet4 like everyone on the cheaper tier?
You’ve made an incredible amount of chat prompts against claude-4-opus-thinking in MAX mode and sonnet too in the last 8 days. I won’t share the specifics publicly (happy to chat in private about your personal usage), but this will likely explain why you’re seeing rate limits on ultra.
You will still see local rate limits refresh every few hours, but that has likely used up your burst limit.
I started using Opus at 5 PM today and hit the usage cap after barely five minutes. Several hours have passed and Opus is still unavailable. My understanding was that the quota fully resets every few hours, but that hasn’t happened at all. Is this normal?
