It is really that hard to not change someone into Agent mode after an update? This is just lazy at best or malice at worst. Why would they want everyone to keep being forced to use Agent mode. I get it for new installs but not for people currently using Cursor.
It seems they haven’t figured out why people use Cursor. If people really want agent mode they would switch to Claude Code. Cursor’s competitive edge lies precisely in the seamless integration of its editor and Agent, yet the Agent mode is moving in the opposite direction.
Please get a fix for this, fast.
Just spent half an hour shouting at LLM to find the guide to fix this, before it found the links to these bug reports.
This is absolutely horrible DevX. If the user sets up their IDE, it must open to same state tomorrow.
Already about to go back to VSCode as somehow some auto-update totally failed and wiped my Cursor setup. Now re-installing I’m hit with these problems + it seems I now longer can move the Activity Bar to the side. I don’t know who is doing the designs, but people have a bunch of extensions and the “on top“ is absolutely un-usable (no matter how “clean it is“).
This just happened to me and I have no option to switch it back to Editor mode. Weeks ago; I could click a drop down menu and it would give me an option between Agent Mode and Editor Mode. Now that drop down menu is gone!
Edit: it seems in Cursor 2.2.20 they deliberately deprecated the toggle drop down menu between Agent Mode and Editor Mode to make it “Agent Centric” this is a load of BS. Give the users CHOICE without making the UX so jarring!
Was updated again today. Was ONCE AGAIN SHOVED, UNCEREMONIOUSLY, into the Agent mode. I DO NOT like that mode, have no interest in using it, and it is ANOTHER SETTING you guys keep overriding. I also had to go through and reset a bunch of my settings, AGAIN.
What is your goal here, guys? I honestly don’t understand. What is the purpose of frustrating your users like this every single time you release, which is almost daily? Using Cursor has become an infuriating experience…is that what you guys want? Utterly baffled…
This makes no sense. I have to think someone is intentionally trying to crash and burn Cursor by frustrating the users. What software continuously overwrites your UI settings with every update. This is some amateur level stuff here.
Its vibe coded without any guardrails or QC. We have a joke where I work:

Its kind of a “Just Ship It!” sort of joke. The command is an alias we created as a joke one day when we were joking around about coding in prod: git push –force master
At the time it was very early for this company, and we WERE puishing things to prod a lot (although not with --force!!) So it was a pretty funny joke, given we were coding FAST, we were generating hundreds of thousands of lines a code a week, and we were cranking out the 80% quality product for tons of brand new things almost daily. We also BROKE PROD a lot! But, we had no users, either…!!!
Thing is, we’ve totally changed tack now that we have users (and just beta users at that!) on the system. We still joke about gpfm but we are much, much more serious and careful about how we do things now, we have established and continue to establish architectural rules and design rules that we and our agents follow, etc.
Cursor? I think its ALL: “gpfm Baby!” Vibe coding without guardrails, and Just Shipping It!

Never push strait to prod, at least, not without guardrails, extensive automated testing pipelines, feature flags, SOLID QC, etc.

Yeah I agree 100%. I complained about some other ui changes earlier this week and people were complaining this very same issue in the thread. I got a reply and I exchanged few messages with a cursor engineer and it seemed like we were heard. Low and behold a new update popped in at yet again I was forced to the agent mode. And I couldn’t either go back to the editor mode no matter where I looked in the settings. Luckily I noticed that in other editor instance I had for whatever reason the editor mode on so I went to settings on that instance and found the option instantly. I restarted the editor where option was missing and it popped up again. Wasted 45 minutes of my day. Talk about ensh*ttification…

Forcing Agent layout breaks established workflows; editor layout must remain default or clearly toggleable.
Now i afraid to update Cursor. That is second time you did real harm with update-with-0-coms

Every time I open Cursor, it defaults to the agent layout, even though I previously selected the editor layout. This preference should be remembered instead of being reset on every launch.
It is infuriating as hell when I have to reconfigure the the editor every week or so after an update. On friday I had to spend my precious time reorganizing the workspace back to what it was because you just wanted to throw everything on it’s head for ■■■■■ and giggles. And what was wrong with the + for adding a new agent chat for instance, I noticed today that even that was changed. This is not how you make good software, jesus christ…
I completely agree; I’m questioning the professionalism of the UI designers here. Such drastic changes are an absolute no-go, especially within developer environments. You build a workflow, customize everything, and then it’s all completely thrown out the window. A definite no-go.
Yes very true, also I personally felt 1.7 version was more better and efficient than the current 2.2 version
At this point I’m convinced you’re just vibe-coding Cursor. This is the 5th time I’ve come here to complain about UI changes and broken functionality I use daily. I’m honestly fed up with this amateur-level product development.
I’ve already moved to Claude Code for agent usage because it’s far more stable and predictable. At least there, I know changes won’t randomly break my workflow. I also hate being forced into this new agent mode, I was perfectly fine with my custom agent setup where I had full control over what it could do. Why was that even removed?
Every update breaks something, and I genuinely don’t have time to come here and deal with this every month.
Not only this, but the current iteration (where you have an agents pane, and a chat pane) is really bad. It takes up way too much screen real estate, just to have a list of previous chats.
This last UI update was awful, please roll back!
I agree this new attempt to force me into agent mode instead of editor mode has made for one damn frustrating day! Took me all day of having the agent sidebar popping up to realize the editor put me into default Agent mode for the nth time. What a productivity burner!
