Feature request for product/service
Cursor IDE
Describe the request
I know people love to come onto forums and complain about how everything is wrong with a product, but personally I love cursor and I love the direction the team has been taking with regards to programatic extensibility to the agent.
In other words, I’ve been trying my best to use my agent not only for code production, but for the whole job. I’ve found incredible value in cursor hooks and other little programatic shortcuts I’ve been able to create on my own.
Personally, I’d really appreciate more hooks that let us plug into the code production lifecycle so that we can programmatically modify agent behavior and use our decades of developer improvements and language design to simplify our products, not add more context on top of them. For example, my company uses typescript and as developers we love it. But the agent commonly produces code that is not type safe or fails lint warnings.
We can attempt to context engineer around this behavior with skills, or rules, or any other modern text based approaches that attempts to instruct the agent to validate before responding. Or the cursor team could add a hook for beforeAgentFinalResponse where developers can simply run the linter and type checker and the feedback is automatically fed back into the agent. Rather than me needing to type out the common “you did this wrong, go fix it” style message.
In general, I’d love to see more of this style approach from the industry, not just the cursor team. I explored the new economics of simplification in a recent essay, and i believe this shift away from prompt engineering and into tech debt consolidation and programmatic simplification is what would really be useful to the industry.
The essay can be read on my personal site if anyone actually reads this post and is interested in exploring how the economics of software engineering are shifting beneath us. RJW | The Programmable Engineer: Another Way of Thinking About the Production and Management of Tech Debt
Great work Cursor team! Tremendous 2025 coming from a real company with real tech debt and real deadlines. Your product saves me huge amounts of time, I find it easy to control and I appreciate that you are not trying to put me out of a job, but trying to give me more tools in my tool belt. Keep up the good work! I’m hopeful for what you bring to the table in 2026
