New Update Available endless loop

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

This has been happening on and off for the past several versions, currently on 1.7.17, on Mac OS (M4 MacBook Pro, Sequoia 15.5). The “New update available” alert pops up, I click “Install Now,” Cursor closes, nothing happens. I start Cursor, after a few moments, the alert pops up again, rinse, repeat.

Normally I can go download and install the latest version of Cursor from the website and the alert goes away, but tried that today and it’s still just 1.7.17 and it’s still happening.

Steps to Reproduce

I can’t guarantee it will happen to everyone, but the steps are pretty obvious:

  • Alert pops up
  • Click “Install Now”
  • Either it works or it doesn’t.

Expected Behavior

New version should be installed when the “Install Now” button is clicked.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. This is a known issue that can happen when the auto-updater gets stuck in a loop. Since you’re already on 1.7.17 and downloading from the website didn’t help, try these steps:

  1. Quit Cursor completely
  2. Delete the update cache: ~/Library/Application Support/Cursor/pending-update (if it exists)
  3. Also try clearing ~/Library/Caches/com.todesktop.230313mzl4w4u92
  4. Restart Cursor

If that doesn’t work, you can disable auto-updates temporarily in Settings → General → Auto Update and manually check for updates when needed

The team is aware of this issue and working on making the updater more reliable. You can check Download · Cursor for the latest version if you need to manually download again
