Cursor 1.6 Update Loop (macOS)

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I keep getting an update notification in my Cursor IDE, and it wont go away. Whenever I click to update, it will close the app but never install the update or restart the IDE. This has been ongoing for a while now and co-workers also experience this issue.

I have tried solutions mentioned in other threads, including downloading and reinstalling a fresh copy of the app.

Steps to Reproduce

Install Cursor on OSX 15.6 Sequoia.
Check for updates
Let the app close
See that it doesn’t reopen (or install the update)
Loop continues

Expected Behavior

Cursor installs update and restarts the app

Operating System

MacOS

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

hi @lhockley thank you for the bug report.

I will try to reproduce the issue.

  • Do you have after you click Check for Updates a Install Now button on bottom left?

In the meantime you can download 1.7 from Download · Cursor

Yes. There is a click to install on the bottom left, which is when the app closes then never reopens.

I have tried reproducing it but when I installed 1.6.46 the update worked.

  • Can it be that when you tried updating first time there was a terminal running in Cursor?
  • Do you have antivirus software which may have locked the update file while checking it?

Suggested approach as some files may be hanging:

  • Delete Cursor from Applications
  • In Terminal remove additional files: sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cursor Warning: this will remove all your your Cursor settings, so back up the folder.
  • Download and version 1.7 or if you would not mind to check download latest 1.6.46 and update.

Just attempted this with 1.6.46 and the update is still failing to happen. I also lost all my config and settings in the process of clean install :sob:

The settings should not be deleted at all as they are in ~/.cursor/

For some further context, here’s what I see if I run from terminal, at the point where the app closes:

I think it maybe was just my theme that reset? :person_shrugging:

Are you still logged in or did it log you out?

If settings were removed you would be logged out

Yeah. I had to log back in. But it does look like all my cursor rules are persisting. I just installed 1.7 and it didn’t have me log back in.

Project Rules would remain as they are in folder. User rules are synched so they would be back.

I had the same update loop issue. Followed your instructions and deleted ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cursor, as I thought the settings was in ~/.cursor.
Now all my non-cursor settings are gone, theme is gone, all user settings and keybindings and agent history is gone.

Please remove your recommendation to delete that folder to prevent others loosing their settings, or at least add that users has to backup their settings and keybindings first. @condor

Thank you, I added the warning for deletion of folder. Apologies to both of your for not catching it sooner.

Thanks! I have now realized that the problem is still there however. I am on 1.7.17 and it fails to update after clicking install. Cursor just shuts down and doesn’t start again and thus not updating.
I think this started happening after upgrading to macOS 26.

I, too, am seeing this same issue today.

I’m having this exact same issue. It’s been ongoing for quite a while now. The new update available button is always there. When I click it cursor shuts down, but never ‘restarts’ on its own. When i reopen manually, the update button is back and no update gets applied. I’m currently stuck on :
Version: 1.4.5 (Universal)
VSCode Version: 1.99.3

note that updating via the manual installer worked fine and I retained my settings as far as I can tell.
