Opus 4.6 Max vs Opus 4.6 Max with Max Mode

Hi fam,

I’m confused about the Cursor models. There’s Opus 4.6 and Opus 4.6 Max. And Opus 4.6 Max consumes more tokens and provides better reasoning than Opus 4.6 if I’m not mistaken.

And there’s the “Max Mode” toggle when choosing a model. Is the Opus 4.6 with Max Mode toggled on the same as Opus 4.6 Max?

Hey @hassib!

Cursor’s Max Mode (which enables long-context windows on models that support it) is entirely separate from effort level, even though they share the same name. Naming things is hard, especially when multiple companies use the same term for different concepts!

So yes, you can use Opus 4.6 Max with or without Max Mode. We’re working on a new model picker to make this distinction clearer.

In reality, the cursor’s MAX mode simply stretches the context to the maximum value set by the model vendor. It has no other function. Interestingly, while Anthropic now almost universally uses 1MB context, the cursor still requires “MAX” mode to be enabled.
