Model selection forces Max Mode; cannot use models without it

When I select any latest model in Cursor, the UI automatically switches to Max Mode. I cannot use any latest model without Max Mode being enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Cursor

  2. Open the model selector

  3. Choose any latest model

  4. Observe that Max Mode is turned on automatically

  5. Try to use a model without Max Mode – it does not appear possible

Expected behavior:
I expect to be able to choose and use models without Max Mode being required.

Actual behavior:
Cursor forces Max Mode whenever I select a model, and I cannot use models without it.

Environment:

  • OS: Linux 6.12.54-linuxkit

  • Cursor version: 2.6.18

  • Date observed: March 17, 2025

Question:
Is this intentional (e.g. a policy or product change) or a bug? If it’s a bug, is there a known fix or workaround?
