Plans are not well supported in Agents View

I have several issues with how plans are set up now that I’m relying heavily on the Agents view.

First, there doesn’t seem to be any control over displaying plans in markdown or preview mode; they just do whatever they want. I have some that open as a preview, and others that are stuck in code. No way to change that display like you can in IDE.

For one older plan I tried to open in the sidepane, it just showed empty. In order to have an agent review and update the plan i had to open the IDE to be sure they could actually read it and it didn’t mess the file up. Now that they’ve done so, I can open those chats in the Agents window and see the plan.

If you select “pin to workspace” nothing really happens; you can close it and reopen a tab with the same plan and it still says “pin to workspace”.

There’s no way to see the plans you’ve created in various chats. You have to either find the chat and click from there, or have added the plan to the workspace via the IDE view to be able to search it. There appears to be a breadcrumb for plans in the workspace under some plans, but it’s not clickable so it’s unclear where that actually lives.

Lastly, agents don’t seem to check off todos in plan mode if they’re not the originator. I frequently have one agent create the plan, and then open a new agent chat to actually build the plan. This means the todos just stay unchecked unless I ask explicitly.

Hey, thanks for the detailed feedback. Here’s where things stand for each item in Agents Window.

Preview vs markdown: a plan that opens in its own Plan tab is always shown in rendered view. There isn’t a raw markdown toggle there yet, though the editor window does have one. If the plan looks like code, it probably opened as a regular file tab instead of a plan. Try opening it from the plan card in chat, and it should open in the Plan tab. If you need the raw text, use Copy as Markdown from the ... menu in the top right of the Plan tab.

Pin to workspace: this button works on the open tab, not on the plan file itself. It pins the tab to the workspace, so it stays open when you switch between chats. If you close the tab and reopen the plan from chat, it creates a new tab tied to that chat, so the Pin button shows up again. If you want to save the actual plan in the project, use Save to Workspace from the same ... menu. The file will be moved to .cursor/plans in the project and will show up in the file tree and search.

Plan search: the + button in the tab bar can search plans from the current chat by title. There isn’t a global list of plans across all chats yet, and the breadcrumb above the plan is display-only right now. For now, the easiest workaround is to keep plans in one place with Save to Workspace. I’ve passed along the feedback about a global plan list and a clickable breadcrumb.

Todos from the second agent: todos only sync for agents started directly from the plan. Select the todos you want in the plan and click Build in New Agent, then the new chat will check them off as work progresses. If a chat is started manually and only references the plan, it isn’t linked to that plan’s todos and won’t mark them automatically.

Old plan that opened empty: I need a bit more info here:

  • Cursor version (Cursor > About Cursor)
  • About when the plan was created and where the file is stored (.cursor/plans in your home folder or in the project)
  • How you opened it, from chat, from the file tree, or from a link

If the same thing happens with another old plan, send those same details for that one too.
