Please stop starting in AUTO model mode!

I change my model to 3.5-sonnet all the time, then when I open new windows it sometimes? switches back to auto. Restarts the app, back to auto. Auto is not what I imagine anyone wants except cursor to control costs. I’m paying for requests, I know what I want, stop changing it on me! Please please re-imagine your pricing model so that it relates directly to the work being done so you can stop trying to optimize that cost and degrade the quality of the result. (Context windows I’m looking at you, micro file reads, same thing)

I hazard to guess why, but the UX has gone downhill over the past weeks. It may look prettier, but functionally the UX is declining. It’s a tool for engineers to engineer, please focus on that.

Hey, which version of Cursor are you using? Have you also tried disabling auto-select for models? In this case, if you create a new chat, the model you previously selected will be chosen instead of auto.

It keeps re-enabling itself if I close/restart cursor. I want to COMPLETELY remove this option and disable it forever.

+1 for not being able to disable

Hey, it seems this is fixed in version 0.48. For me, the previously selected model is retained when restarting or creating a new chat. You just need to wait for the update, or you can get it right now by enabling early access. In any case, let me know if you encounter the same issue in the latest version.

Another option is to create a custom agent, set the model you want to use with that agent, and then set it to your custom agent in Cursor Settings > Chat > Default new chat mode. This is what’s worked for me.

0.48.2 does this still on cursor restart.

For me, it works both when restarting and when creating a new chat.

Yes i understand. I always see the “Auto select” on when i restart Cursor even i turn it off immediately afterwards and select the model i prefer.

This is still happening in 0.48.6 (I’m on Windows if it matters)

This is a horrible cost saving measure, it makes the user experience 10x worse

It still happens in 0.48.7 @deanrie

Canceled pro today because of this. Not having the option to disable it is a dark pattern. I hope you guys reconsider the product choices you’re making.

I was using .47 when posted 2 weeks ago, took the plunge and enabled early access.

I still get switched to AUTO , with the switch disabled, and I just lost 2 hours coding, walking in circles , to realize I was again tricked, robbed and disrespected as a customer , check the image

All my last 2 hours problems was solved in 1 single prompt with the model I was working previously. and I was charged 10 times in a NON TRANSPARENT MODEL, LOW PERFORMER, WITH AUTO DISABLED.

this is really upsetting and breaking the trust in Cursor.

It’s unacceptable.
