Regression: Chat no longer renders inline LaTeX \( ... \)

The Chat renderer no longer renders inline LaTeX expressions delimited by \( … \). The source is shown literally instead.

Minimal reproduction:

\(x^2 + y^2 = z^2\)

Expected behavior:
The expression renders as inline math.

Actual behavior:
The literal text \(x^2 + y^2 = z^2\) is displayed.

This appears to be a regression in a recent Cursor version. Please restore support for inline LaTeX rendering. It would also be valuable to support a broader KaTeX/LaTeX subset for more complex equations, matrices, aligned expressions, and other technical or research discussions.

**Describe the bug:** Inline LaTeX delimited by `\( … \)` is shown as literal source rather than rendered math.

**Steps to reproduce:**

  1. Open a Chat conversation in Cursor 3.11.13 on Linux.
  2. Send `\(x^2 + y^2 = z^2\)`.
  3. Observe that the delimiters and source are displayed literally.

**Expected behavior:** The expression renders as inline math.

**Actual behavior:** The literal LaTeX source is displayed.

**Additional information:** This is a Chat UI renderer issue, not a model-specific generation issue. Cursor remains usable, but this substantially impairs technical and research discussions. I do not have a request ID available for this conversation.

Hey, thanks for the detailed report with the version and repro, that really makes debugging easier.

This is a confirmed regression in the new chat renderer. Inline math \( ... \) (and also \[ ... \] and $$ ... $$) stopped rendering and showed up as literal source. The fix is already landed internally and should ship in one of the next stable updates. I can’t give an exact ETA, but the fix is ready, once the release picks it up, your example \(x^2 + y^2 = z^2\) will render correctly.

A couple notes for next time:

  • Single-dollar inline math $ ... $ is intentionally disabled, otherwise currency amounts like “$5 and $10” would be treated as a formula. Use \( ... \) for inline.
  • More advanced syntax (matrices, aligned, \frac, \sqrt, etc.) is supported via KaTeX.

Let me know if after the update any formulas still don’t render, and we’ll take a closer look.
