Remo-SSH extension broken again

Yesterday the remote SSH has randomly stopped working for me. When I try to connect to host, I see an “activating extensions” notifications but the window listing the hosts doesn’t show up. Sometimes it does show up after 5 minutes or so and I’m able to connect but I can’t open any files on the remote server. I’m on macOS Sequoia 15.4.1.

In VSCode, everything works fine.

I tried everything, I completely purged the Cursor installation, caches etc. I did a clean reinstall of Cursor 0.47, 0.48, and 0.49. Nothing worked.

This is all incredibly frustrating, and it’s not the first time I’ve had issues with using Cursor in SSH mode.

I’ve now installed Windsurf, which connects to the remote server just fine, and I’m thinking of cancelling my Cursor Pro subscription and switching to it after using Cursor for over a year.

Hi – sorry to hear the connection isn’t working. Could you share the logs from the “Window” and “Remote - SSH” output windows?

Also, wondering which version of the remote extension you’re on? If it’s ms-vscode-remote.remote-ssh, could you instead install the @id:anysphere.remote-ssh extension and use that one? Attaching a screenshot. Thanks!

I was using the ms-vscode-remote.remote-ssh extension. Switching to @id:anysphere.remote-ssh fixed the issue immediately, thank you!

How come this isn’t the default?

The Anysphere extension is newer, so we’re rolling it out gradually. Our plan is to make it the default soon!
