Summarizing chat context never ends

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Hi,
All is the title: summarizing chat context never ends. I have seen a lot of topics on this matter, but all have been auto-closed without any resolution.
This is really annoying because it stops in the middle of a process, and all I can do is open a new chat and re-explain all the context, as when you give the previous chat as context, cursor cannot read it:
“Ah, je m’excuse ! Vous avez raison, je me suis trompé de contexte. Je ne peux pas lire le chat précédent directement”

Steps to Reproduce

Use the chat and wait for summarizing chat context, and wait forever

Expected Behavior

It summarizes quick and continue. Ideally with a progressbar or some kind of status

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Current Cursor Version (Menu → About Cursor → Copy)

Latest, latest, latest

For AI issues: which model did you use?

AUTO

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey Thanks for the report. Summarization issues are affecting multiple users, and the team is already investigating.

To help diagnose your specific case, please share:

  • The exact Cursor version (Menu → About Cursor)
  • The Request ID with privacy mode turned off for the chat where this happens
  • The context percentage at the moment you start summarization
  • Whether Max Mode is enabled in the model settings

Workarounds:

  • Start a new chat with the rule: “Maintain full awareness of previous conversation context. Do not reset or forget prior work when summarizing.”
  • Switch from AUTO to a specific model (Sonnet 4.5 or GPT-5)
  • Enable Max Mode when working with large context (expands the context window)

Let me know if these steps help, or share the diagnostics above.

Thanks for the answer. I can’t share to preserve my customer’s privacy.
I will try your workarounds, and I hope you can find a solution soon.
