Since the latest update of Cursor, I’ve encountered an issue where I can’t input text in the chat field. This happens when I open Cursor Chat in an editor tab and then use the “Move Editor into New Window” command to open the chat in a separate window.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Open Cursor.
- Open the chat in a separate editor tab.
- Use the “Move Editor into New Window” command.
- Attempt to input text into the chat field in the new window.
Expected Result:
I should be able to input text into the chat field in the new window without any issues.
Actual Result:
I am unable to input text into the chat field in the new window.
Environment:
- Cursor Version: 0.42.2
- VSCode Version: 1.93.1
- Commit: c499aee5f16e67815c7dc795ff338dc8ab3e07f0
- Date: 2024-10-12T05:39:54.471Z
- Electron: 30.4.0
- Chromium: 124.0.6367.243
- Node.js: 20.15.1
- V8: 12.4.254.20-electron.0
- OS: macOS 15.0.1 (24A348)
Additional Notes:
A native feature to open the chat in a separate window would significantly improve usability and streamline the workflow for users who prefer working with the chat in a dedicated window.

Hi @FelixII
Cursor chat doesn’t support new windows yet, only Composer does, but you need to enable it in the settings.
Hi @deanrie
Thank you for your quick reply.
I understand that Cursor currently doesn’t offer a native way to move the chat into a separate window. I believe this would be a fantastic feature for a future update.
In the meantime, I’ve been using a workaround where I click the “Open Chat in Editor” button and then use VS Code’s “Move Editor into New Window” command to open the editor tab in a separate window. This approach has worked well in the past.
However, with the latest version of Cursor, I’ve encountered an issue where I can no longer input text into the chat when it’s in a separate window.
Update: I found a workaround for the issue: entering some text into the chat before moving it into a separate window allows me to input text. However, the chat still behaves strangely. The first character cannot be deleted, and keyboard shortcuts like Command + A to select all text don’t work.

I’m also struggling with this bug and really hope that the Cursor can support new windows in new versions. This would greatly enhance our user experience.
It would be really nice to have cursor open the chat in a separate window. Looking forward to this feature. BTW, I am enjoying cursor. Nice tool. Thank you.
