Update to Teams and Auto Pricing

Whoever writes these press release blog posts really know how to hide the real meaning. Just say Auto will no longer be unlimited.

Also, it’s amazing that they continue to make so many decisions that are actively harming this product. Step outside your bubble and see what’s really going on.

he said it wouldn’t affect annual until the subscription renews, so you could sign up for an annual now and lock in unlimited Auto for a year. But that is if nothing else changes, but at this rate it is hard to say.

Hey, let me clear a few things up!

  • As of your next renewal after September 15th, Auto will no longer be free and unlimited, and instead will be charged at the token prices listed. The cost puts Auto at a very strong cost/intelligence ratio, and the team is continuing to tune and improve things under the hood
  • Auto does not currently offer any level of thinking, but as mentioned, the team is still working on Auto and may offer this in the future.
  • If you are already in a yearly plan, nothing will change until your next renewal at the end of your yearly period, both in how usage is consumed, and in the cost of Auto.

As with our changes to the Pro plan, we have made these changes now to ensure our pricing remains flexible and viable for the future. As new, more costly and more powerful models are released, the fixed requests model would have ended up a confusing and unclear structure. We’d likely end up having to either reduce the 500 requests down or continue to set arbitrary request costs for the more costly models.

The new structure means you consume exactly what you use, and with the addition of our in-app usage tracker, this should now give you much clearer visibility on your consumption and remaining usage.

For all the details, please refer to our blog post, or drop us an email at [email protected] and the team will be happy to get back to you!

Now not only does the Pro plan run out in just a day, but the auto mode which was useless to begin with is now completely pointless to use. What’s the point of the subscription at all?

Wow, can’t believe this. In Pro plan you’d already use credits in half a week, even without using Claude, but at least you could smartly interchange Auto without limits. Now Auto uses same costs so it’s completely useless? Why would I ever use Auto instead of picking my own model?
Is this being done because you have crazy users (the kind that ranked up thousands of dollars with free GPT5 in a week) that are abusing Auto to no end, probably doing tens of thousands of requests a day? Then limit those users. Do not limit people who maybe do 50-150$ worth of requests in a month and greatly appreciate cursor’s pro plan and Auto-mode, but will now simply quit for having same or worse prices than Claude Code or whatever.

With a Pro plan, you always get more LLM usage than the price you pay.

At the very least, Pro already means you have access to all of Cursor’s models, as well as Tab and the Cursor editor, for a flat cost. However, with the bonus usage on top, you will get >$20 of usage on the $20 plan with all the API model providers - the additional usage is much higher with higher plans too.

If you are finding that you are using all of the usage on Pro in one day, it likely means you will need to upgrade to a higher plan, as the costs of your LLM usage is greater than what you are paying, even with the additional bonus usage the Pro plan allows for.

The web dashboard is a great place to see this, as you can see how much LLM you have used, the costs you would’ve paid directly to the LLM providers, and how much you have paid us!

Auto is one of the cheapest ways to work in Cursor, and is probably the best cost/intelligence ratio you can get vs picking a specific model. While we are now charging for Auto, you can still make use of it interchangeably to help spread your usage to the whole month.

I have never seen so many pricing/service changes to 1 product in such a short span of time. This is ridiculous.

Just a note: if you’re from the EU, you can get a refund even if you’ve used all your free API credits. It’s worth a shot, because what they’re doing is crazy. Just mail them, and technically, by law, they must respond.

The blog post is purposely vague. Using phrases like “competitive token rates” and “heavily invested in quality” makes it sound like an enhancement as opposed to the rollback of a perk. A perk a lot of people paid money to have. All these dates, “Dec 2023”, “June 2025”, “September 2025”.

Just say, “auto did not cost extra before. after a certain point depending on your plan, auto will now cost extra.”

So, we’re about to start paying for something that was previously free. Combined with the unclear and suspiciously fast “rapid request” limits we now hitting each month that we previously weren’t, it’s not looking good.

And why did i have to come to the forums to bump into thee blog post about such a major change in the pricing structure? This seems like something you need to e-mail us about and let us make an informed decision on if we want to continue using Cursor. I get e-mails about cursor on web and mobile (which no one wants or needs). I get e-mails about cursor on slack. E-mails about ChatGPT-5 but no e-mail about a MAJOR pricing change?

Can you guys give us some good news sometime, or has it been nothing but downgrades lately?

Is this also for Ultra users?

I mean, there is no longer any unlimited usage in Cursor? In any plan? For any amount?
Maybe you could at least implement my idea with OpenAI.

The reason you and I keep talking about this is because no competitor is doing a good enough job. I’m looking for someone to post here, “I found it! Cursor but cheaper, without pricing changes every couple of days.”

I’m spreading this gospel, the more people use it, the more strength the project gains.

What happens if, in October 2025, I add 10 more users to my existing team of 50 users? I am currently on a yearly team subscription, renewing next in July 2026.

I’m not a whiner who thinks Cursor should operate at a loss to subsidise people’s bottomless LLM use but I do have some concerns about the update specifically to the Teams pricing.

I know Teams is sold as “everything in Pro, privacy mode, admin dashboard, SSO, etc.” so it makes sense that Teams would change to have the same $20 allowance as Pro but please consider making the Teams allowance $40 (since that’s what the Teams package costs).

The principle that “you’re allowed LLM usage up to what you’re paying” seems fair enough but that should be $40 for Teams.

To answer a few more points:

  • These changes to Team pricing are just an alignment with the existing, simpler structure of Pro. These changes introduce no new concepts and should make the whole pricing structure of Cursor simpler and more flexible for the future.
  • Email notifications of these changes should be going out shortly to ensure users are aware of these changes.
  • As mentioned, nothing changes for existing users until the end of your billing periods (monthly and yearly). For teams, the pricing of new and existing users will remain as is until the end of your billing period.
  • All individual plans, including Ultra, have already moved to the new usage system. The only changes to all users are those regarding the new pricing of Auto.

Whoa, whoa, whoa — hold on!! You’ve already started contradicting what’s written in the blog!!! Do you even coordinate between the news departments???
You said that individual plans have already been switched — but the blog says the switch will happen starting September 15.
So, if I subscribe to the annual plan before September 15, I should still have unlimited Auto, right?

i get why so many pricing changes are happening - there’s no free lunch and this company cannot keep giving out free sh*t forever. but the communication has been terrible.

the reason so many of us are upset is because it feels like a rugpull from a couple weeks ago when you guys were screaming from the rooftops that auto mode would be free and unlimited.

i think this could have been handled a lot better if you guys were already planning to charge lower (non-zero) token rates for auto. i actually liked how you guys handled the gpt-5 promo.

we’re still cursor users because its still the best AI editor despite all the noise.

if anyone at cursor reads this- just know that actions like this are causing your users to slowly lose trust in the brand, the product, and the team behind all this magic.

just be honest and upfront when you want to make pricing changes next time, and most importantly, stick to your word.

dont beat around the bush in your blog posts and forum replies - tell the freeloaders that frontier AI costs money and you arent a charity. we will respect that and pay you for it.
