Updates wipe all history

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I’ve been using Cursor as my primary editor now for about a month and every single update (which seems to be nearly daily?) wipes all my chat history. The first time I thought it was a fluke. 2nd time I decided to not update until i was in a place to lose all my chat history. Sure enough, update again, lost. While I don’t need chats for a long time, Cursor updates what feels like every day (which in of itself is annoying as an end user) and so to lose chat history is frustrating. I now just ignore all updates.

Steps to Reproduce

Click the install update button

Expected Behavior

I don’t lose all my chat history

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. This is a known issue, and it usually happens when there isn’t enough free disk space during an update.

Try restoring the chat history, the data might still be saved locally:

Windows path:

  • C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Cursor\User\workspaceStorage\
  • Open the project subfolders and find state.vscdb using DB Browser for SQLite
  • Search for keys like workbench.panel.aichat.view... or workbench.panel.composerChatViewPanel...
  • Also check C:\Users\<YourUsername>\.cursor\projects\<project_name>\agent-transcripts

For the future:

  • Free up disk space before updates, this is the main cause of data loss
  • Install the SpecStory extension for automatic chat backups
  • You can postpone updates if you’re working on a critical project

Let me know if you manage to recover anything.

I have 601GB of free space so shouldn’t be that.

Does look like C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Cursor\User\workspaceStorage\

has all the chats. So doesnt seem like a storage issue its just like it loses the ability to reference them?
