Why does the cursor still require max mode to be enabled even though Claude has already opened up one million context windows?

Why does the cursor still require max mode to be enabled even though Claude has already opened up one million context windows?

Hey, this was already answered in a similar thread here: Anthropic just announced 1M context GA at standard pricing for Opus 4.6 & Sonnet 4.6, when will Cursor reflect this?

However, for legacy request-based users, max mode still needs to be enabled to use 1 million contexts. This is inconsistent with the pricing of 200k contexts!

Hey, got it. Quick summary: extended context over 200k, including 1M, is only available via Max Mode. That’s an intentional choice that applies to all models, not just Claude.

What changed after the Anthropic update: they removed the 2x surcharge for using context over 200k tokens. So billing is cheaper, but access to 1M context is still via Max Mode.

As Colin mentioned in this thread Anthropic just announced 1M context GA at standard pricing for Opus 4.6 & Sonnet 4.6, when will Cursor reflect this?, for request-based plans you can use a special model key claude-4.6-opus-high-thinking-1m via Cursor Settings > Models. The team is also working on a new model selector that will make choosing the context window easier.

Let me know if you’ve got any other questions.
