AI features completely unresponsive ("taking longer than expected...") across all devices, modes, and projects since yesterday

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Since yesterday, none of the AI features in Cursor are working for my account. Every single request gets permanently stuck on “taking longer than expected…” and never receives a response.

Here are the key details of the issue:

Scope: It happens across all devices (laptop and desktop) using my account.

Features affected: It occurs in all modes—not just Agent (any model/agent), but also Ask, Edit, and standard Chat.

Environment: It reproduces even on brand new projects created from scratch as well as completely fresh chat sessions.

Duration: Persistent since yesterday with 0% success rate on any request.

Troubleshooting steps already attempted:

Tested on multiple devices and networks.

Tested in a completely new workspace/project with no prior index or context.

Cleared all tabs, cleared account cache, and restarted the IDE.

Logged out and logged back in.

I have already submitted the debugging logs directly through the IDE using “Developer: Capture and Send Debugging Data”. Please help reset or unblock my account session.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Cursor IDE on any device logged into my account.
  2. Open any workspace (or create a brand-new project from scratch).
  3. Open a new chat in any mode (Agent, Ask, Edit, or Chat).
  4. Send any prompt or simple message (e.g., “hello”).
  5. The request instantly hangs and permanently shows “taking longer than expected…” with no response ever being generated.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

3.21.9 (system setup)

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey there.

Please upgrade to the latest version (3.21.12), where we pushed some fixes for exactly this!

The website and auto-updater are still serving version 3.21.9. Could you please provide the direct download link for 3.21.12?

Same issue, I can not find the updated link to fix this bug, this happens in IDE and standalone chat, this is preventing me to work.

Hey! I was facing the exact same issue.

You can fix it right now: just go to the official website (cursor.com) and download the installer again. Even though the file name still says version 3.21.9 instead of 3.21.12, the fix has already been applied to that executable on their servers.

Just run the installer to overwrite your current installation, restart Cursor, and it will start working immediately (it worked for me!).

Is version 3.21.12 being rolled out gradually or is there a direct download link available for the macOS Universal build?

@Helidon_Topjanasi This issue, and the fix in 3.21.12, is only specific to Windows. If you’re facing an issue on Mac, I’d suggest raising a new thread.

Hey!
I am at Version: 3.21.13 (system setup). But I am also facing this exact same issue. I received this update (version 3.21.13) 3 to 4 hours ago. I was using the agent mode. At first it was showing- “Planning next moves” and then stuck at “Taking longer than expected…”.

I’m experiencing exactly the same issue. I’m also on version 3.21.13, but the problem is still happening. Requests get stuck on “Taking longer than expected…” and never receive a response.

It looks like updating to 3.21.13 did not resolve the issue for me either.

i have the same issue

i am in Version 3.21.16 in windows and i have the same pb

I am on 3.21.16 - Cursor is unresponsive. It was working in the morning. Same issue as other people report.

It started working again after reloading window. But I tried this before and it did not help. Feels like it stops working randomly.

I just upgraded to version 3.21.16 but I am still having the same issue

Still having the same issue.

I’ve already updated Cursor, cleaned the directories/cache, reduced state.vscdb, completely reinstalled Cursor, and even tested a fresh installation on another PC.

It still keeps freezing and becoming unresponsive constantly.

At this point, it seems clear that this is not related to my local installation or a specific machine/project.

Cursor is currently almost impossible to use.

Installed previous 3.20 version and it works fine so far.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your reports. It looks like in some cases, Windows is still struggling (and taking longer) on 3.21 than before. We’re collecting your reports and the team is looking into it.

Hi, I also tested this by uninstalling Cursor 3.21.16 and installing version 3.20, but the problem still persists.

The AI features continue to freeze and remain stuck on “Taking longer than expected…”.

So far, the issue persists across different versions and installations.

I’ve just updated to the 3.21.18 version, OS windows and still have the issue
