Always play sound on output completion (sometimes it doesn't)

Hi Cursor team,

I currently have sound notifications enabled for output completion in both the Terminal and Chat.
However, the sound doesn’t always play reliably when a task or message completes.

I’d like to know:

  • Is there a way to make sure the completion sound always plays (100% of the time)?

  • If not, could this be considered as a feature request?

Use case:
I rely on the sound to know when long-running commands or AI responses are done, especially when Cursor is running in the background. But right now, the notification sound only plays sometimes, even though completion has occurred.

If it’s a bug, I’d be happy to help diagnose. But if it’s by design, I’d really appreciate an option to always play the sound on completion, without missing any.

Thanks in advance!

Environment:

  • Cursor version: 1.3.9

  • OS: Windows 11

  • Sound notifications: enabled in settings for both Terminal and Chat

Hey, thanks for the report. In Cursor, we added a sound notification only for when the agent finishes responding. If you have this enabled and it doesn’t always work, it might be related to your Cursor settings. Could you also show me what settings you have configured for sound notifications?

Is there any other option to play sound on Cursor for agent generation completion?

I already tick on that (image’s tick) on and left it. I want make sure the agent play sound on every generation.

There are no other settings as far as I know. Try running the agent and check if the sound is playing.

Sometimes play, sometimes don’t

Can confirm I think I’ve noticed this behaviour… or, I’ve become a victim of auditory habituation after hearing it so many times!

What does that mean? Am I being challenged?

When you’ve heard a noise so many times, you longer register it. Like living next to a train track.

Nah. I don’t hear so many times completion sounds, so I am in confusing.

So I am here and asking😭

I think you’re right, I also didn’t hear the sound a couple of times. I’ll report it to the team.
