Ask -> Plan mode gets stuck in Ask mode on Build

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Ask → Plan mode gets stuck in Ask mode on Build. Trying to force agent mode does in the same context does not work.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Start a prompt in Ask Mode
  2. Swap to plan mode
  3. Build that plan
  4. The agent will say: “You’re in ask mode, so I won’t touch files directly.”
  5. Swapping to Agent mode and retrying does not work

Expected Behavior

Build out of Plan Mode should always be in Agent Mode.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

No - Cursor works, but with this issue

Hey, thanks for the report. This is a new variant of Plan Mode issues we’re currently tracking. You’re right, Build should always run in Agent mode.

Could you please share a Request ID so the engineering team can investigate? (In the chat menu, select → Copy Request ID)

As a temporary workaround, start a new chat for the Build step instead of switching modes in the same context.

I’ll pass this on to the team.
