"auto" not working

Describe the Bug

I wanted to try auto, which is supposed to be truly unlimited and use frontier models, but I was only able to use it for a few (~3) requests and now it just returns an error:

The model returned an error. Try disabling MCP servers, or switch models.

  • Opened Chat
  • Selected “Agent” (or a mode based on it)
  • Selected “auto” as the model
  • Started using it for around 3 requests before it stopped working with the error above.

Expected Behavior

I expect auto to be consistent in availability and quality.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, have you tried this in non-custom mode? Also, try disabling some MCP servers and check if any are interfering with the agent’s operation.

It started working again all of the sudden, I didn’t do anything.

What is the “non-custom” mode?

You have a custom mode selected called “IMPLEMENT”.

Ah, sorry, yes. I tried a non-custom mode and had the same error.

Same Issue.
I encountered the same problem when using Figma’s official MCP.
After several attempts, only the AI model claude-4-sonnet could complete the AI dialogue normally. I also encountered this problem when the model was set to auto.

Hey, try switching to another model, like Claude.

So this is a problem with the AI model rather than the Cursor itself?
