Change the Chat Name

Hey Cursor Team,

As I build my history of working with Cursor, especially the chat interface, I find myself wanting to give my individual chats a name (essentially be able to edit what shows up in the tab at the top).

Perhaps this can be possible sometime. I could see it being useful in the context of larger projects where you might link the chat to a requirement (e.g. a ticket, or feature the customer requires). This would come in handy for recall from @past chats also.

Many thanks,

Justin

Hey, you can actually do this by opening the chat history window.

Awesome, I missed that. Thank you.

Feature request for product/service

Cursor IDE

Describe the request

add the option to manually name a tab, I see that currently the option is only available through “Show Chat History” but this is not as convenient, since you want to name the tab when you are working.
this will make referencing the tab from another agent easier. perhaps have a tab id visible as well.

Operating System (if it applies)

Windows 10/11

Hello!
In support and justification of the request, which was considered resolved, but I believe that the proposed solution is not obvious and not convenient enough: Feature Request: Allow Manual or Programmatic Setting of Chat Tab Titles
It is not possible to change the chat header in a convenient way, namely by double-clicking on the header as standard for the UI, which is generated automatically. I have to call up the chat history and edit it there.

The second, which is more important:
In my workflow, I use several specialized chats, each with its own context, which is very convenient. In every chat, a more precise context is established, helping the AI assistant behave more accurately and avoiding the context window limit for a longer period. These chats can thus be used throughout the development cycle without needing to start a new one after reaching the context window limit, or when the character of the AI assistant deteriorates and becomes less manageable.

Currently, there is no native option to set a permanent system prompt for an individual chat, which forces users to use workarounds like attaching the prompt as a file or inserting text repeatedly.

Such specialized chats are very useful for keeping the AI context focused and manageable during long projects. I would like to request the possibility to set a permanent system prompt for each chat, without relying on workarounds.

Thank you for considering these improvements.

Hey, you have the option to change the chat name. To do this, you need to open the history window.

Deanrie, I’m sorry, but I insist that this is not the most convenient and obvious way… If you don’t believe me, ask the AI)) I’ve been using various programs for many years, and for various reasons, I really want Cursor to be perfect. And I’m a perfectionist - when using it for a long time, I may start to get annoyed by some insufficiently convenient little thing in the UI.
