Claude Sonnet 4 rate limit issue on active Pro Plan

Describe the Bug

Issue Description:
I’m getting a “You’ve hit your rate limit on this model” error for Claude Sonnet 4, despite having a freshly paid Pro Plan invoice and showing $0 / $20 usage.

Context:

  • I’ve been using Pro Plan for over 6 months
  • Previously paid for 500 premium requests per month, which worked fine
  • I have an active Pro Plan with a recently paid invoice
  • My account clearly shows $0 / $20 (Usage-Based Spending this Month)
  • The limit was exhausted in just a few hours, when it normally lasted me 2-4 weeks

What I’m seeing:

  • Error message: “You’ve hit your rate limit on this model”
  • Pro Plan shows as “Active”
  • Usage: $0 out of $20 consumed
  • Suggestion to “Switch to Auto” or “set a Spend Limit”

Major Interface Issues:
Your new interface is completely unreadable and confusing. Where is the information about how many requests I have left this month? Previously I had 500 premium requests included in Pro Plan - am I now supposed to pay for each request individually?

The Problem:

  • I paid for Pro Plan which previously included 500 premium requests
  • Suddenly rate limited after a few hours of usage (used to last weeks)
  • My account shows $0 usage out of $20 limit
  • No transparency about actual request counts or what changed
  • Interface provides no useful information about current limits

Questions:

  1. What happened to the 500 premium requests I was paying for?
  2. Do I now have to pay per request instead of having them included?
  3. Why does my usage show $0 if I’m hitting limits?

I think it’s a bug or something. I had $10 left in mine a couple of days ago, and now it’s gone. All my usage has been with in my limits and the log shows no spend.

Hey @astralski. Looks like you used more than the equivalent 500 request limit on the old plan within 2 days by using claude-4-sonnet-thinking, which will have used up your burst rate limit.

Your local rate limit can still be used and will reset every few hours.

That said, you should be able to use your premium-based usage once you’ve hit this limit.

I think there was a bug with some folks after upgrading plans, that their usage-based spend reset to 0 in the UI, but still existed from the previous plan in the BE for the month, so they had hit their limit but it wasn’t shown in the UI, which seems to be the case for you here.

This should fix itself tomorrow with the calendar month spend limit cycle resetting.

Hi @IsaacHopkinson, thanks for the explanation, but I’m seeing some major issues that don’t make sense.

My billing doesn’t add up:

I went through my usage log and added up all the costs:

  • 68 requests that I got charged for = $12.87 total
  • But my account shows I spent $30

Where did the extra $17 come from? That’s a huge difference.

Can’t even track my usage properly:

The new system is completely confusing. Requests that come from my “included” allowance just show “-” with no token usage details. How am I supposed to know how many requests I have left when I can’t see what each one actually costs?

Before, I knew exactly where I stood - 500 requests, period. Now I have no idea if my next request will use up my remaining allowance or push me into paid usage.

The real problem - massive price increase with no warning:

I’ve been using Pro for over 6 months. Before, thinking requests cost 8 cents each. Now they’re averaging 23 cents. That’s almost 3x more expensive for the exact same thing.

I used to get 2-4 weeks of usage for my money. Now the same amount of work gets done in 2 days because everything costs so much more.

What really bothers me:

You guys just switched the pricing without telling anyone. I woke up one day and suddenly my requests cost 3x more. No email, no warning, nothing.

If you needed to raise prices, fine - but you should have told your paying customers first. I’ve been subscribing for months and this feels like you just pulled the rug out from under me.

Questions:

  1. Why does my detailed usage show $12.87 but my account shows $30?
  2. Why don’t included requests show token usage so I can track my allowance?
  3. Why didn’t you warn subscribers about this huge price increase?

This whole thing has been really frustrating. I just want to understand what happened and why my bills don’t match up.

Confirming we fixed the usage spend yesterday (and it’s now reset to 0 again as expected as it’s July 1st)

You can still opt out of the new rate limiting pricing if you’d prefer from the Settings → advanced → opt out of new pricing

As for the specifics and for your usage spend, It’s possible this wasn’t actually charged, and we are unable to provide individual support for billing related questions via the forum, please reach out to our email at [email protected] and they’ll look into the specifics for you.

cursor is so ■■■■■■■ broken now. After waiting hours between questions all day, my code is so throughly ruined that I give up. I cant even make slow requests. I’d rather every single request be slow then whatever this rate limit ■■■■■■■■ is supposed to be. I was trying to be cool about it, but it’s completely unusable.
Cant wait to wait 5 hours for 1 attempt thats going to ruin everything

Hi @IsaacHopkinson, thanks for the response, but I’m experiencing several frustrating issues:

Already upgraded and hitting limits again: I actually upgraded from PRO to PRO+ after hitting my limits, and now I’m hitting limits again - and it’s only mid-month! I haven’t been using Cursor excessively at all.

Double billing issue: I purchased PRO+ for $60 just a few days after paying my $20 PRO invoice. You never refunded the difference, so I essentially lost that $20. This feels really unfair.

Missing opt-out option: The “opt out of new pricing” option you mentioned in Advanced Settings doesn’t exist. Maybe it was removed? This makes me feel like you gave people a brief window to escape the new pricing and then took it away.

Forced into expensive plans: I feel like you’re pushing me toward the $200/month plan, which has usage equivalent to $400+ in API costs. That’s way more than I need and a huge jump from $60.

Request for middle-ground pricing: Could you please consider adding a plan around $100/month with maybe $150 worth of usage? The gap between $60 (PRO+) and $200 (Ultra) is massive and forces people to either struggle with insufficient limits or massively overpay.

This whole experience has been really frustrating. The sudden price increases without warning, the billing issues, and the feeling of being forced into plans that don’t match my actual usage needs is disappointing from a product I otherwise love.
