CLI just says "Generating..." for a long time

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor CLI

Describe the Bug

The agent just says “Generating…” for a long time. There’s no way to tell if anything is happening. It’s still responsive, I can Ctrl+R, send new chats, and Ctrl+C, but nothing new happens. If I kill it and start again, it works fine.

Steps to Reproduce

cursor-agent
Use as normal.
Eventually it just doesn’t seem to be doing anything.

Operating System

Linux

Current Cursor Version (Menu → About Cursor → Copy)

CLI version 2025.08.15-dbc8d73

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Model: Claude 4 Sonnet.

EDIT: seems to be happening with GPT-5 as well.

Hey, thanks for the report. Could you also specify your Linux distribution?

Thanks for the quick reply!

Hmm, I also just tried resuming a session (e.g. cursor-agent --resume=e8618bde-5a9b-42f9-bc31-362678a51553) and it was able to get past Generating and on to Thinking, so that’s good.

Thanks for the info, it might have been temporary. Please let me know if it happens again.

Well no, the issue is still occurring. I’m just able to work around the issue by doing Ctrl+C and then resuming the session. But I would prefer to not have to do that.

I have seen this as well, especially with -p - f, it finishes a task and just hangs. Sometimes it it will quit after N seconds, sometimes it take a long time.

Sounds related.

@sam.saffron the case you mentioned are not related as there the AI output works but in OPs case the output hangs at Generating…
