Cursor Annual Plan and Unlimited Auto Mode — Worth It?

Hi everyone,

You’ve probably seen the announcement about the new Cursor pricing changes, according to which Auto Mode will no longer be unlimited.

I’ve heard that if you purchase an annual subscription now, you can keep unlimited Auto Mode. I understand that the quality of Auto Mode isn’t great, but it’s still quite useful for handling simple tasks. Personally, I use it often, because the $20 monthly allowance isn’t a lot.

I suspect Auto Mode will improve over time, so I see an annual subscription as an investment in the future. I asked Cursor support whether there will be any difference in Auto Mode between old and new subscribers, and they told me it will be the same for everyone. I hope that’s true.

Given this, I’d like to hear your thoughts:

  • Will it really work as I expect — unlimited Auto Mode for a year?

  • Is it worth it?

  • What alternatives to Claude Code exist?

  • How do Claude Code and Cursor compare in terms of cost, quality, and usage limits?

I’d appreciate your advice.

i have the same thoughts

I don’t even know if what you wrote is true about AUTO remaining free for those who purchase an annual plan, and I’d recommend you check that.
AUTO is the best model for finding things quickly and for performing many coding tasks.

In fact, I’ve tested it on UI tasks, and it did a better job than high GPT-5!

It’s less good at fixing complex bugs and can easily get stuck in an infinite loop when chasing bugs.

Confirmed if you bought plan for a year you still can use unlimited auto

I’ve just received a reply from Cursor regarding my earlier question.
It doesn’t seem to make much sense to me — I’m quite surprised, as I had assumed that an active subscription would protect against negative changes in pricing.

Does this mean that all users, even those with long‑term subscriptions, were moved from 500 requests to the $20 plan?
Does anyone know for sure?

Hi Murgur - thanks for reaching out!

Purchasing an annual subscription before September 15th will not keep Auto mode unlimited indefinitely. The changes to Auto mode will take effect at your next billing renewal after September 15th, 2025. At that time, Auto mode will begin consuming your included monthly usage at specific API rates.

You can find all the details about these changes in our blog post: https://cursor.com/blog/aug-2025-pricing

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Best,

I genuinely like Cursor — to me, it’s a thousand times better than GitHub Copilot.
I haven’t tried Claude Code yet, so I’m not sure how far their plans go in practice.

That’s why I’d like to hear what others think.
I’m not considering the $20 tier, but let’s compare the Ultra plans at $200.
Has anyone here had direct experience with them?

What they are saying is that if you buy the plan on September 14th, 2025, you will have unlimited auto until you renew on September 14th, 2026.

So not indefinitely, but you at least get a year of unlimited auto.

Oh, I’m confused again. Apparently, “indefinite term” means one year — but in the email I received, the date is listed as sometime in 2025, with no mention of when the subscription actually ends.

Could one of the moderators clarify this in a transparent way?
I’m using a translator, so I might be misunderstanding something.

They did not say “indefinite term” they said “will not keep Auto mode unlimited indefinitely”

If you renew for 1 month BEFORE September 15th, 2025:

  • You keep unlimited Auto mode until the same date next month

  • Example: Renew on September 10th → keep unlimited Auto until October 10th

If you renew for 1 year BEFORE September 15th, 2025:

  • You keep unlimited Auto mode for the entire year until your next renewal

  • Example: Renew on September 10th → keep unlimited Auto until September 10th, 2026

I suggest just pasting this message into any AI chatbox and ask them to translate it for you for simplicity, it will be able to explain better.

Hope this helps.

Claude Code is not much different from Cursor, it just consumes less tokens. But its usage limit will not be enough for times when we need to use many requests, but in the long run, Claude Code allows us to use more requests than Cursor. I still prefer Cursor.

This is a genuine question. People keep saying claude code is the competitor, but is it really a similar service as Cursor? Am I missing something?

Does Claude Code integrate into the IDE as intimately as Cursor, have tab completion, create restore checkpoints with each request, allow inline requests, show diffs and allow to manually choose which changes to accept, automatically gathers context with open tabs and looks through your project folder, monitors clipboard and which files and specific sections of code you are just simply looking at let alone interacting with, easily switch between models, allow copying a section of code into the request to give it very clear context?

I know I didn’t waste any time, I went there and already secured mine

Yea, I was considering getting a refund/account credit and then buying the annual again to get the full year. but who knows where things will be in a year, so probably not necessary

If it is not unlimited for me, I ask for a refund here in Brazil due to commercial disagreement. We can ask for up to 90 days if the company does not honor the agreement. The card holder will give me my full money back.

On annual plan Auto will remain free until next renewal date after Sept 15. 2025.

What about the student plan? Those who are using Student One Year Pro, will they get free auto after 15th September?

Why is there no button to upgrade to adult payment?

I have Ultra — what do you want to compare it to? CC?

Adult payment?

Monthly plans are upgraded to new tracking on 15th September
