Cursor "Auto" is no-longer unlimited

This news was heart-breaking. I joined cursor because of the unlimited tab completion. Yes it has certain, quirkiness and disadvantageous sometimes. But it didn’t matter, I can try how much ever I want and from different perspectives to debug and to build.

Now it seems that Cursor is going another way, which sucks because that means I have to migrate and finally unsub from Cursor.

Maybe anyone wanted to ruminate on how good and niche cursor was?

Hey, I get the frustration. You’re right: Auto really was unlimited until August 2025, and that was one of the key features.

As of September 15, Auto became paid at API rates ($1.25 per 1M input tokens, $6.00 per 1M output tokens). Users who bought an annual plan before the change kept unlimited Auto until the end of their subscription period.

What plan are you on right now, and how often do you use Agent/Chat?

I’m on Pro right now. I use Agent/Chat basically every chance I get really. I never really migrated to others and stayed loyal to Cursor just because of the unlimited package Cursor was offering.

I am on Pro Plus, since this month Auto is being billed which kind of sucks, it was very useable for main tasks I only needed to switch to advanced models for complex stuff.

If I hit the limit, this will make me use more VS Code with Copilot and even Antigravity. Price Policy and the latest Feature changes did not make Cursor better. I cant get it to read comments from GitHub pr request anymore, and its not possible to connect to Virtual Machines on cloud agents anymore. What’s the point of Cloud Agents then anymore?

Cursor’s plans $20 or $60 plans are simply unusable because everything runs out in a matter of hours. You subscribe to a plan that’s supposedly monthly, but it ends in hours or a few days, depending on your usage, and after that you simply can’t use the tool anymore.

Then you’re forced to use the automatic mode, which isn’t automatic at all, because it only uses the Composer model, which, let’s be honest, is useless for complex tasks or those involving backend development. It basically solves very simple and quick things…

For this reason, I abandoned Cursor and subscribed to Antigrafic. At least it offers a realistic limit and, when you reach that limit, it recharges in a few hours, which makes sense in a monthly plan.

This is feedback from a user who has used Cursor since the beginning: their billing method is simply terrible… it makes the tool useless.

Are you hitting your subscription limits?

Automatic seems to be Claude 4.5 most of the timne, so its pretty sufficient for me at least.

I am at $110 usage of my $60 Plan and 11 days to go till next montrh.

I hope Auto stays unlimited

I still have unlimited auto, and I hope things will change before my billing method changes too. I loved using Auto all the time, except when I needed to perform a complex task, for which I used a expensive model. I know models are not cheap, but there must be a compromise: a rate-limited ‘Auto High’ and an unlimited ‘Auto’ for basic tasks.

Feel sad that i have to move to Antigravity :frowning:

I am at $90 Auto Mode only lol - and its Claude and Opus 4.5 most of the time which is ■■■■■■■ awesome. I hope the auto unlimited stays

EXACTLY THE SAME REASON I WILL LEAVE CURSOR !!

Cursor was a promising tool, but it’s becoming increasingly greedy. I genuinely don’t understand how AI was more affordable and useful in 2024–2025 than it is in 2026. It makes no sense.

I’m on a Pro plan — I understand that offering unlimited access to premium models isn’t sustainable. But Auto was supposed to be unlimited. That was a core part of the value proposition. At the very least, you could offer Composer 1 as a free, unlimited-token model. That would be a fair and respectable offer: if we’re paying, we should have access to at least one model without usage limits.

Please take this feedback seriously.

Really? Compare GPT3.5 to Opus4.5

AI is so much better, but that comes at a price. Cursor Auto routes to top-level models, depending on your task requirement.

did-not know that until now. its very sad. i was curious that i was using same way cursor as in previous, not too complex stuff. and i have to set on-demand usage..
at least your ai model should be free for pro users. or i have to move another IDE.

Sure, I get that models like Opus 4.5 are more powerful than GPT-3.5 — no argument there. But that doesn’t change the core issue: Cursor is still getting greedy as hell.

It’s not just about model quality. It’s about access. In 2024–2025, we had at least one model we could use freely and without token limits. Now? Nothing. No fallback. No Composer 1. No free tier with real utility. Just paywalls and quotas.

Meanwhile, WindSurf offers their in-house SWE-1.5 model completely free and unlimited, with full AI chat, code completion, and terminal integration — no token caps, no tricks. That’s what respect for developers looks like.

I’m already switching to a mix of Antigravity, WindSurf, and Continue.dev, Because I’m done throwing money at a company that keeps moving the goalposts and stripping away what made it great.

Cursor had something special. But if they keep going down this path, they’ll lose the very community that made them relevant in the first place.

Unlimited is done bro, It’s not existing anymore as Cursor is getting greedy as hell. Just switch between few AI-IDE like Antigravity, WindSurf, and Continue.dev and stay in the free plan. you can even buy Datacenters IP and make few free accounts with different Mail and IP. They dont deserve our support anymore.

Oh boy. It’s not just that they’re greedy, it’s probably quite the opposite.
They were probably about to lose money, if they hadn’t already. I bet no one found the right compromise to both make significant profits by selling subscriptions for AI use and please users.

There is a world where everyone wins. That’s probably how Copilot handles it, or Claude Code, but certainly not the current state of Cursor auto mode.

See in attachment how I, with the unlimited, consume auto mode… they obviously can’t handle this much of tokens

So for your information my total cost for the Auto mode in unlimited for Cursor was 234$ at this time. That’s ~10x more I pay for using Cursor.

Oh okay boiiii. But grok is way cheaper and they’ve removed it. Those companies from Palo alto never really loose money ma boiiii
