Strange, a couple of weeks ago my auto usage was not counting as usage quota, as auto is doing thing really good lately I have been using it a lot, then I noticed it started to use my extra billing quota today.
a weeks ago? maybe its related toCursor Subsidize to people? Around Christmas, they give some generous token for people using it especially Composer-1, Opus or Auto.
I said couple of weeks ago because it was last time I checked, I never overflow the quota unless I am working too much with Claude which I haven’t done at all. But for sure this last 1 or 2 days auto started to count as usage and blew my quota without notice.
Just to be clear, Auto is billed at competitive token rates for all users, including those who subscribed before September 15th. The change took effect at each user’s next billing renewal after that date.
At your next billing renewal after September 15, Auto will contribute to your included monthly usage at competitive token rates. From December 2023 to June 2025, Auto was priced at the same cost as other premium models. Since June 2025, Auto has been unlimited for individuals and priced at the same cost as other premium models for teams. We’ve heavily invested in the quality and overall performance of Auto.
@Colin In the current iteration, is there a direct pricing advantage to using auto? In other words, if auto selects a model for me, is it billed at a lower rate than if I had chosen that same model myself? Or will I get more “free” usage beyond my plan limits with auto?
I’m trying to experiment with optimizing my workflow, performing more tasks with less expensive models like Grok, but from the docs it’s unclear whether I’m helping or potentially even hurting my overall cost/available volume. More clarity in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I wasted $150 on a cheap model without being informed about it.
Cursor did not inform me in my user account or via newsletter that Auto Mode is no longer free. This is a violation of a standing contract under international trade law.
No compensation or acknowledgment was provided by the company, even after the facts were presented in writing.
This is clear fraud and will be prosecuted by us.
Further cooperation with Cursor has been terminated until the case is settled and for an indefinite period.
Personal recommendation: Be careful and look for alternatives.
We will now work with other companies to achieve a certain functional equivalence with Cursor in order to create adequate competition.
i think that there are email for Auto Mode is no longer free.
and they have blog for this case, its since September 2025 Auto not free anymore. especially for billing or people use yearly, perhaps you can email [email protected] to ask about this pricing if you dont understand.
As a colleague posted in another topic here, the change was based on September announcement, but only took effect now on December 30th as own cursor team answered him on email. Instead of a request based billing they changed all the plans to token based billing. And still people between September and December were able to use auto mode freely without any of the information provided in the September 15th post about auto mode having effect over them, including myself.
