Everytime I change to a specific model in Cursor CLI, the model briefly generates upon input then bounces back to open input. Auto mode processes the request properly. Using Macbook Pro.
Steps to Reproduce
Use Cursor CLI on Macbook and choose specific /model in Cursor.
Expected Behavior
Cursor CLI should function no matter which model is chosen.
Operating System
MacOS
Version Information
CLI Version 2026.03.11-6dfa30c
For AI issues: which model did you use?
Multiple; Claude Sonnet 4.6 ; thinking; Gemini 3.1; etc.
On the Hobby (Free) plan, the CLI only supports Auto mode. It automatically picks the right model. Specific models like Claude Sonnet 4.6 or Gemini 3.1 are only available on paid plans (Pro and above).
The fact that the CLI shows those models in the picker but then fails silently instead of showing a proper error is a known UX issue. The team is aware. Related report: Cursor CLI only works with Auto mode.
For now, Auto mode is the working option on the Free plan.
If you need access to specific models, you can upgrade your plan at cursor.com/dashboard.
