Cursor deleted by itself

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Suddenly Cursor was gone today from my Windows. I had to download and install again!

I am running version 2.6.14 or one prior to that. I am assuming that it is the automatic update that does that.

After installing all my chat histories seem to be still available.

Steps to Reproduce

Unknown

Expected Behavior

That it stays on the system.

Operating System

Windows 10/11

Version Information

IDE Version 2.6.14

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, this is a known issue. The Windows auto-updater can sometimes remove the current install without finishing the update. The fact that your chat history is still there confirms that only the app binary was removed, not your user data.

We shipped a fix for this earlier, but it looks like it can still happen for some users. The team is aware.

A couple questions to help us narrow it down:

  1. Do you have any third-party antivirus or endpoint protection on the system, like CrowdStrike, Zscaler, etc.? Sometimes they silently remove apps.
  2. Do you remember the exact version before Cursor disappeared? Was it 2.6.14, or did it update from an older version?

Also, please check the folder %LocalAppData%\Programs\Cursor. If it is empty or missing, that would confirm the updater is the cause, not antivirus, since antivirus usually moves files to quarantine.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks, no third party stuff that removes anything silently.

Not sure what version exactly, but I have just updated a few days ago prior to that incident.
