Cursor keeps deleting itself after I restart windows always. I saw 1000s of issues reported by other users and you guys havnt been able to fix it so far! And you guys keep saying we have deployed a fix this week or that week but the issue is still there. What kind of support is this?
Steps to Reproduce
Just restart windows and sometimes yor see cursor gone.
Hey I get it losing the app after every restart really gets in the way of work. This is a known issue on Windows. When there’s a pending update it applies as remove then reinstall. If Windows restarts or shuts down before the install phase finishes only the removed part stays. It often gets worse with antivirus or EDR especially Microsoft Defender ASR on work machines which holds files during the update.
What you can do right now
Restore reinstall from Cursor · Download. Settings and extensions are stored in %APPDATA%\Cursor and %USERPROFILE%.cursor. They don’t get lost only the app binary disappears.
Prevent turn off auto update in Cursor Settings > search update.mode > set to none and install updates manually. Also fully close Cursor including the tray icon before restarting or shutting down Windows.
If you have antivirus or endpoint protection typical for work PCs add an exception for the install folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\cursor or your custom path so it doesn’t hold handles during the update.
Honestly I can’t give a timeline for the fix. The issue is being tracked but it depends on reworking the update mechanism and there’s no quick solution yet. The workaround above should stop it from disappearing again. Let me know if the problem comes back after turning off auto update.
