Cursor keeps crashing and I keep losing AI conversations and plan documents

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Over long-running conversations with AI agents, Cursor starts to slow down, and eventually crashes. When this happens it is usually catastrophic, as I lose both the AI conversations I had open, as well as any plan documents that I had created in plan mode.

This happened just this morning. I spent most of yesterday in plan mode, having the AI explore a complex feature and write the steps for extending it. This morning I clicked “Build”. After thinking for a few minutes, Cursor crashed. When I reopened it, it was all gone.

Steps to Reproduce

No immediate steps to reproduce. It happens after Cursor has been open for a while.

Expected Behavior

Cursor needs to save conversation copies and plan documents locally and restore them in event of crash.

Operating System

MacOS

Current Cursor Version (Menu → About Cursor → Copy)

Version: 2.0.77

For AI issues: which model did you use?

Happens with all of them

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

hi @enragedcamel and thank you for the detailed bug report.

As this is not a common issue with a default installation we need further information to identify the cause.

  • Please check Help > Open Process Explorer and post here a screenshot. It would show if some part is using more memory or cpu than it should.
  • Do you have any processes running in terminal within Cursor?
  • Does this also occur on a new project? (would indicate large chat storage)
  • Does this occur when you run with extensions disabled? cursor --disable-extensions

More info:

Note that you should be able to save the plan to a file from the main plan part in chat.
