Cursor silently switches from Claude to Composer without user consent

I’ve noticed that Cursor IDE keeps switching from Claude to Composer mode quietly and without any notification. This happens seamlessly in the background, making it easy to miss.

I understand the need to manage resources, but I’m a paying customer. These silent cost-saving tactics feel dishonest and undermine trust in the product.

Please either:

  • Keep users on their selected model consistently

  • Or at minimum, provide a clear notification when switching occurs

Transparency matters, especially for a paid service.

Hey, thanks for the report.

To better understand what’s happening, could you share:

  1. Which mode are you using (Ask/Agent/Plan)?
  2. When does the switch happen, on Cursor launch, during normal use, or when switching modes?
  3. Which Cursor version are you on? (Help > About)

A similar issue is discussed here: Model selection resets to Composer 1 when switching Ask/Agent modes
In that case, the model resets to Composer 1 when switching between Ask and Agent.

The team is already aware of an issue where the selected model doesn’t load correctly when switching modes. Any extra details will help us understand your case.

this happens when i start new chat . for example i select sonnet then click on Send button and it resets to Composer 1. then i need to stop and to set again to sonnet

Thanks for the details. This is a known issue with saving the selected model.

Temporary workaround: set a default model per mode. In the model dropdown, you can set a default model for Ask, Agent, and other modes. Example: Choose a model for each mode - #3 by Artemonim

The team is working on a fix.

Also, to confirm, which Cursor version are you on? (Help > About)

with default agent it still switches to composer 1

Same. This stinks like an intentional change to boost the usage stats of the in house model. Which is way worse by the way.
