Dishonest network error message "Result: Error: Streaming responses are being buffered by a proxy in your network environment"

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

I’m a paying user, and Cursor Chat is unresponsive, but it keeps blaming my network.

Cursor backend is slow, maybe because of its lack of resource for high traffic, but the error message is default to blame user’s device.

Cursor Chat worked yesterday, but not today. When I ran Network Diagnostics with HTTP Compatibility Mode: HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2.0, it always showed error:

Ping
Result: Error: Response took 11605ms

Chat
Result: Error: Streaming responses are being buffered by a proxy in your network environment

Agent
[2025-11-01T04:40:27.557Z] Pushing next message
[2025-11-01T04:50:26.251Z] Error: ConnectError: [aborted] Error
(It took 10 minutes)

I am in home network, not behind any corporate proxy, I don’t have any proxy or VPN software in my computer, other network activities on other software works just fine. I uninstalled Cursor, deleted all of its configuration files in different paths, then installed it fresh.

I also asked my friends to run Network Diagnostics and they saw the same results.

Steps to Reproduce

Run Network Diagnostics when Cursor backend is having traffic spike.

Expected Behavior

Be honest that your backend is having problem. Tell your users to go having a cup of coffee and try again after a while to avoid traffic spike on your backend. Do not blame users’ device and make them waste time on looking for issues on their device and network.

AI activities are resource-hungry, we all understand that. AWS had a blackout last 2 weeks. Azure had a blackout last week. Maybe Cursor backend is unresponsive because its infrastructure providers are having problem. Just be honest. Don’t waste my time.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Yes - Cursor is unusable

Hey, I’ve seen the same issue, even with no VPN or custom DNS. I tried both with and without Cloudflare Warp (VPN software) and only got it sporadically, which points to a backend load rather than my network. I’ve attached a few screenshots showing the error with and without any network changes.

Here’s a screenshot of when it works:

And when it doesn’t:

I thought having the browser agent running might be the source of the problem, but it doesn’t seem to be related. Hopefully someone from the team can weigh in.

Hey, thanks for the report. I see you and your friends are experiencing high ping and buffering errors in Network Diagnostics.

This looks similar to the issues described here: Slow Request + High Ping on Network Diagnostics.

Could you share:

  • Your region/ISP (helps identify potential regional routing)
  • A test via mobile hotspot: does the issue persist on a different network?
  • A DNS change test: try Google DNS 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 System Settings > Network > DNS

While Network Diagnostics errors suggest connectivity issues, the fact that multiple users are seeing this at the same time could indicate a routing or infrastructure problem.

If that’s helpful, here are my own details:

  • India/ACT Fibernet ISP.
  • The problem does not occur when I switch to ControlD DNS, Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, or enable Cloudflare Warp VPN.
    • When I revert to my default DNS and no VPN, it works fine.
    • This suggests the issue is only sporadic, and does not necessarily require a DNS or VPN.

Same issue with me.
After sending a request from the chat it worked.
