Endless loops and unrelated code

Describe the Bug

During my recent development session, the Cursor AI agent repeatedly entered endless loops and provided off-topic responses, significantly hindering productivity and causing frustration.

Key Issues:

Endless Loops:
The agent repeatedly asked the same diagnostic questions or performed the same codebase searches, even after I had already provided the necessary information or clarified the problem.

Instead of progressing to a solution, the agent would cycle through the same troubleshooting steps multiple times.

Off-Topic Responses:

The agent frequently addressed unrelated issues (e.g., bank verification notices) that were not part of the current task or user query.

This led to confusion and wasted time, as the agent would attempt to fix or discuss components that were not relevant to the problem at hand.

Failure to Maintain Context:

The agent often lost track of the current objective, even after explicit instructions and clarifications.

It would revert to previous, already-resolved issues or misinterpret the focus of the conversation.

Example:

While working on investor classification persistence, the agent began discussing and attempting to fix duplicate bank verification notices, which was unrelated to the current task.

Despite repeated clarifications, the agent continued to loop on the same off-topic issue.

Impact:
Significant delays in development workflow.
Increased frustration due to lack of progress and repeated irrelevant suggestions.
Reduced trust in the agent’s ability to follow instructions and maintain context.

Request:
Please investigate and address the root causes of these endless loops and context loss in the Cursor AI agent.

Improvements are needed to ensure the agent can:
Maintain focus on the current user query.
Avoid repeating the same troubleshooting steps.
Refrain from addressing unrelated issues unless explicitly requested.

Steps to Reproduce

I dint know - it has recently happend in auto mode and keeps occuring

Expected Behavior

Not to repeat requests in a loop and npt to work or comment on unrelated code.

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Yes I agree, facing this since last few hours…Agent is practically useless at this point. Doesnt understand at all
Randomly refers to some answers from outdated conversations.
Example It wrote some tests, ran it found issues and said, the issues were at the implementation side and these are geniune test failure, so I asked to investigate into the implementation issue. 3 attempts - it did nothing other than creating a todolist and just concluded Have fixed everything and everything passes now! lol!

I tried with both claude4 and gemini-2.5-pro…both are behaving erratic…

Some answers are ok, but most are going haywire…and not to forget tokens arent free…

I got the same issues today, and i get reply from a guy, who asked me to use MAX, but i don`t want to. I want a functional product, not a trash one. I canceled my sub, written a mail, and i am waiting for a refund.

@ASMXGroup8122 @sunnydsouza thank you for the bug report. To be able to identify the cause we need more information

  • Does this happen on a new chat or primarily on longer chats?
  • Could you post a Request ID with privacy disabled so we can look into the details? Cursor – Getting a Request ID

It happens on new chats and long chats (I tested)

Thank you, I have filed the issue with dev team, appreciate that you checked in detail!

I have the same issue, I can start a new chat, but after a while it breaks down and goes into a loop. Even before the loop the performance is horrible. It is like the shole context management system has broken down

Can confirm. I originally though the issue was coming from Claude 4, but auto has the exact same issue. After the 3rd exchange in a new chat, the agent start the requested task, stops in the middle of whatever he was doing then immediately circle back on an old issue. And I can tell it to ignore it as much as I want he will always apologize, start of working on the requested task then immediately circle back to the old issue.

i have the same issue this morning, two times… i been forced to start a new chat because agent enters in a endless loop… paying for ultra tier… please fix that

Me to, will start a new chat, it will be fixed for a bit, and then return.

Hi, the looping bug here was fixed, can you let me know if you see any more looping issues? (Any request IDs would be great!)

Yep same here. Cursor went totally stupid for all day and it started tearing my project apart because it was looping conversations and “fixing” wrong things!

hi @thereverend has it been resolved for you with the fixes we applied?

Yes seems to be back to normal operations. Man that was wild. It went way rogue for half a day. I hope to never see THAT again. Thanks for the fix.
