yep its unusable.
Reverting to 1.3.8 seems to fix the issue. You can download that from the link below.
Just make sure you disable auto updates before installing this version. You may want to back up any settings too, as the 1.3.8 default install directory was different than my 1.4.x install.
i just disabled gpt-5 in settings for now, seems to fix the convo lenght issue
Nevermind. It improved and I was able to get to 20+ prompts, but then the message appeared again even in 1.3.8.
Edit:
Sometimes I can’t even execute a single prompt.
2 weeks ago I was using this same project and working for hours at a time in one chat window. This is pretty much unusable currently.
Things I’ve tried:
Reducing context by removing all rules and MCP servers
Removing all memories
Reverting to an older version
Removing GPT5 from my list of models
Manually using sonnet as my model
Manually using auto as my model
Nothing has helped.
Unusable, this needs to be fixed asap!
Happening to me all day since I updated to the latest version, with no context and one prompt. My info:

The has been happening for me since like 5 days ago.
It is unusable. FYI, I am in Seoul, Korea.
Same here, unusable, wtf
same here since the latest update (1.4.3=
is this intentional so as to make auto mode unusable?
Same here, but if I ignore the warnings sometimes it’ll work. If not I just need to start a new conversation, which can be a pita.
tell cursor ai to create app asking it to do it in sections so u dont get “Your conversation is too long. Please try creating a new conversation or shortening your messages”#
Same. Needs to be an update ASAP.
I’m getting constant “conversation too long” warnings/errors, which are totally disruptive and very much a new thing. It happens even after taking the advice and starting new with a summary; literally 5 minutes later it’s complaining again. Totally infuriating.
I actually just came to the forum to see if anyone else is having this issue. I received the warning after two prompts, and they weren’t updating anything crazy. I ignored the warning and went about my business. Not sure why this is happening. I’ve been trying my best to work around it.
I was having this exact problem too, the auto update also failed to install. I installed from the website and now chat does not even start! Just flashes the empty chat dialogue at the footer of the chat window and nothing happens! Seriously broken now!
yea this ■■■■ happened about 15 hours ago I cant even use cursor anymore after this after 2 prompts in a new convo it says too long
Okay, seems pretty clear that something went squirrelly with an update or something… frustrating, but s*** happens. Hopefully there’s a fix soon.
@Rob , I also had the thing about updates not installing, but then they just started working for no obvious reason. Dunno.
I just upgraded to Pro+ too, which makes this all a bit more aggravating, tbh.
The problem is GPT-5, turn off agent auto.
@deanrie Is it still not fixed?
I found a temporary fix. Download version 1.3 from the website, disable GPT5, and voila, it should work. At least, it did for me lol
