Forum Overwhelmed: Time to Reevaluate the Business Strategy and Ensure Adequate Preparation

Previously, when the Sonet Max model was supported, it was stated that due to cost issues, Pro users needed to cover the expenses themselves. However, now there’s a sudden influx of free student registrations. Does this mean the cost issue no longer exists? I understand this as a strategy to attract users quickly for marketing and business expansion purposes, similar to what JetBrains did. That makes sense. But now, the forum is flooded with student-related issues, and it feels very unprepared. Some countries were listed one moment and removed the next, with various problems emerging continuously. I find the forum now crowded and disorganized.

From my experience over many months, there are times where specific issues cause a lot of form posts.

Agreed that it would be better to structure forum more and organize it.

Personally I created bookmarks for topics i wanna collaborate on or read later, also created advanced filters that let me read stuff i can help with or am interested in.

Overall it will need better forum organization and management @Eric

Hey, thanks for your thoughts here.

We’ve had a lot of lessons learnt from releasing our student discount plan, but we tried to quickly clean up the forum by closing all the student discount-related posts and move them into one thread.

Regarding the costs, as long as the student plan is not abused, we believe the cost to be reasonable for the benefit of enabling students to use and learn how to develop and code with AI.

We never make decisions that would impact the experience of paying Pro users, but I understand how it may have felt like there has been mixed messages recently.

We’re always try to do better, and we have learnt lots to ensure future events and rollouts like this will go much smoother.

Thank you for your reply.

I also came from a student background, so I fully understand the excitement and appeal of having access to a great product like Cursor for free. When I first brought up the issue of cost, I did feel a bit of imbalance emotionally. But as I continued writing, my thoughts evolved—I came to believe that this is ultimately the right thing to do, especially for students who may not be financially well-off but are eager to learn and grow.

I kept my original wording in the post because it reflects my honest thought process. I believe it’s more important to be transparent about one’s journey than to hide or polish it.

As for the title and some of the early phrasing in my post, I realize now that they were influenced by seeing many discussions around student subscriptions in the forum. If any of those words came across as offensive to the student community, I sincerely apologize. In hindsight, I can see that some unintended sense of superiority might have come through, and I feel ashamed of that.

Of course, as a user, I still hope that Cursor can continue to improve its value proposition and strike a better balance for everyone.

Thank you all for your understanding and engagement—I wish the best for Cursor’s future.
