Frustrated with Cursor’s Token Hungriness

super agree with u and i have same exxperience and feel super bad , i am changing my workflow to vscode + claude code

If a company changes the terms of a contract after you have agreed on specific services, you can take legal action based on the violation of European consumer protection laws. The key regulations in this area are:

Unfair Contract Terms Directive (93/13/EEC):
This directive protects consumers from unfair terms in contracts. A term is considered unfair if it creates a significant imbalance between the rights and obligations of the parties to the detriment of the consumer. If a company unilaterally changes the terms without your consent, this may be deemed unfair.

Consumer Rights Directive (2011/83/EU):
This directive requires that consumers are fully informed about the contract terms before it is concluded. Changing the terms after the contract has been signed without your consent violates this requirement.

Consumer Rights Directive (2011/83/EU):
Sellers are required to provide clear and comprehensible information about the total cost of goods or services, including all additional charges, before you sign the contract. If this is not done, the contract may be declared invalid.

Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (2005/29/EC):
This directive prohibits misleading actions, including non-transparent or deceptive pricing.

What you can do:

  • File a complaint with the national consumer protection authority.
  • If the violation affects many consumers, you can contact the European Commission, which may initiate an investigation at the EU level.

I agree. The quality has deteriorated significantly and I do not understand how fast the plan runs out. So much tokens are wasted even on the most mundane, random tasks. Total disappointment!

Looking at your image and comparing it to mine, also does not make sense. Seems the pricing is different. (comparison of claude-4-xxx usage)

Seems like they are playing around with the token count and pricing to maximize profit for each individual. I hope these guys go bankrupt, what an ugly way to disappoint your customers.

Will no one from Cursor officials respond to this disgrace!? I paid over $350 for Cursor this month, and now I can’t use it at all. I have an ultra package. It’s forcing me to use auto mode. It’s gotten to the point where, when you ask about models you don’t even know which model works with, they don’t respond, constantly delete code, and then build and run push commits themselves.

Also, support is responding to AI. You’ve completely betrayed our trust, taking payments but not providing service!

Be careful not to switch models mid-conversation (from auto to a specific model like sonnet), I just hit the limit for just one prompt or two. I guess the cursor fed all the previous conversation records into it, which doesn’t seem to be the right approach.

@Andrew_Yen thats a very good point. Switching models mid task may require the chat thread to be sent to a new model provider. Will add that to my observations too.

Here are some insights about token usages and what they mean, plus what you can do to reduce them.

@danperks Hey, just stop right there!

Stop trying to deceive your users. Marketing the Pro plan as “unlimited” and then acting like you’re doing us a favor by granting “$150” or “$250” worth of usage is nothing but a scam. This isn’t a privilege—it’s what we paid for. We’re paying for the exact features you advertised. Acting like you’re being generous is an insult.

Let me be clear:
We pay you for “unlimited” and “extended” usage. You use these promises as flashy marketing, but in practice, you invent invisible limits and lame excuses. You sold us Pro as “unlimited,” yet now you’re quietly imposing restrictions and pushing us to upgrade to your Ultra plan. This is not just misleading; it’s fraudulent and deceptive conduct.

It’s obvious you’re deliberately throttling Pro users to force them onto higher plans. If there’s a real limit, state it openly from the start! You can’t sign people up with promises of “unlimited” service and then add hidden quotas and restrictions in the background.

If you keep this up and continue treating your customers like fools, you’ll lose your user base fast.
Your credibility is collapsing, and your business model is turning into outright fraud.

Bottom line:
Deliver what you promise—don’t spin fairy tales. If you call it “unlimited,” make it unlimited. If not, be honest and watch how fast users abandon ship!

I don’t think anybody truly gives a crud about how you people calculate tokens; we care about the very clear disparity in usage that customers are getting. You have people that committed to a year in some cases and you continuously mess around with the usage limits; had I known how lackluster the service would be, and how chaotic the usage would be, I’d have not commited to a year, that was my stupidity, Cursor’s stupidity is the frequent modifications to usage limits.

This is unfair and worthy of a inquiry with the US Better Business Bureau, because at the very least this is unethical, and should be questioned.

At this point in time, as a company, you have destroyed good will, faith, and trust in Cursor. I would request that you speak to your leadership and offer people refunds (prorated of course), so that as a business and as a customer we can go our separate ways, and call it a bad relationship.

This is the end of Cursor. Either they change their policy or they’re going to die in the next few months. Luckily I was subscribed per month and I will NOT renew my subscription

Go on Reddit, you can install it in your terminal.

From a commercial point of view from Cursor, what’s happening is genius though.

How many of us have started with a cheap Pro plan, lured by the unlimited slow request promise, and here we are spending $$$/month in higher plans and usage-based billing?..

A few weeks ago I even got contacted manually by email by one of their their sales person, asking why I didn’t finalize my purchase of Pro+ plan, after I hit the “unlimited” wall and clicked the upgrade link.

Typical of a company that needs to make cash after a growth period during which they hooked customers with an overly discounted product.

I’m seriously considering that too!
at least then I know that for 200 I will get pretty much unlimited Opus and unlimited sonnet 4
Last 1.5 hours my output with Cursor 0 code fixes, since this thing is running in circles around itself

No, they won’t.

But they will censor the ■■■■ out of the very people who made their business what it was.

I think they must have been the sort of kids who put their hands over their eyes and thought nobody could see them.

Go on cursor, remove this one too…

Good to see you’re all so busy with the actual product and not policing opinions of PAYING CUSTOMERS online…

Pathetic

Completely agree. Not only have I used up my entire paid subscription allowance, but I also paid an extra $20 that was gone within 3 days too. I seriously can’t understand why the current pricing is so absurdly high. I haven’t even finished half of my project yet, and I’ve already burned through all my credits.

I’m done with this ■■■■. I cancelled (with refunding) my yearly Pro subscription and moved to Windsurf.

FYI: Sam, who answers you in support emails, is a bot.

The fact that you are such a new company playing games, when or name a company this tactic has ever worked out well for? None. Not renewing, not recommending.

Did you purposely not answer the main question, why are tasks that usually take under 5,000 tokens, taking 3-4 million tokens!!! The problem here is that we’ve tested the same prompts on other systems like windsurf using the same ai model and we get the usual < 5,000 token requests that Cursor now spends 3-4 million tokens on. This is why everyone is running out of credits, its very clear. You literally answered like 10 people and avoiding answering the main issue people are having! It’s starting to seem like your obtuse response is on purpose? That’s what a lot of people are starting to think. There is clearly a bug that is processing many times more tokens than it used to, this is why peoples credits are being used up in a week! You need to fix this or I and many other users are gone. I’ve already started using Claude Code as a result of this and it’s looking pretty good. Requests are using under 2,000 tokens that cursor is saying is 3-4 million tokens. Why would anyone ever use Cursor again, you are literally processing and charging for 800x more tokens with this bug. It’s absurd, and for you not to acknowledge it makes me seriously consider never coming back. FIX THIS ASAP!

It seems like you are mocking and making fun of the people here who are clearly showing that the tokens are way off from what should be used. Clearly this person is experiencing this exact bug where 5,000 token tasks are using 4 million tokens, yet you joke like wondering how he could have used that much API, HE DIDN’T IT’S THE BUG OVERCHARGING PEOPLE BY 800%. STOP PURPOSELY AVOIDING ADDRESSING THE ISSUE AND MAKING FUN OF PEOPLE WITH THE ISSUE.

You wrote “@Codingbotguy I’m surprised to hear you have managed to consume enough to hit our limits, although looking at your account, you have used >$2000 worth of model usage already! Thats over 15,000 requests to models (more than 1 every 2 minutes, 24/7). I’d love to hear more about your usage pattern that has got you to this point!”
