Grok Bot: Update/Reset stuck on “Backup not ready” / endless “Transferring data”

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Grok Bot

Describe the Bug

Grok Bot’s Computer Update/Reset is stuck. Settings shows “Backup not ready” and Update Grok Bot’s Computer cannot proceed. After Reset, UI stays on “Transferring your data” for over 1 hour with no detailed progress. Bot computer itself still responds (box-doctor PASS); this looks like a backend backup/transfer gate, not a local app-only issue.

Please recover/rebuild the Agent Computer backup/transfer state on the backend for this account.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Grok Bot Settings → Updates → Update Grok Bot’s Computer
  2. Observe “Backup not ready” and Update blocked
  3. Freed ~39GB disk on the Agent Computer; status unchanged
  4. Tried Reset Grok Bot’s Computer; stuck on “Transferring your data” 20+ minutes, then over 1 hour
  5. Sampled box network during wait: ~0 MiB/s RX/TX (transfer not visible on the live box)

Expected Behavior

Update or Reset should complete, or backup should become ready so Update can run.

Operating System

Already tried

Disk cleanup (~39GB: Unity Hub/projects/caches), Update retry, Reset, long wait. In-app SendFeedback unavailable (privacy mode).

Does this stop you from using Cursor

Sometimes - I can sometimes use Cursor

Hi @warpdev

I checked and your box should be in a healthy state again. Can you confirm?

Thanks for checking. To clarify: the Agent Computer itself is working fine for normal use (chat, tools, box-doctor all PASS). The problem is specifically that Update Grok Bot’s Computer still cannot run — Settings still shows “Backup not ready”, so the update is blocked. Healthy runtime ≠ update unblocked.

Hey @warpdev, sorry this has dragged on so long.

Unfortunately, we would probably have to start you on a fresh, empty Grok Bot’s Computer to get you working again, which means the files on the old one would be lost. Here is why:

  1. When the computer lost its connection to our servers on Sep 19, it stopped backing up. The old computer has since been removed, so the only copy left is the backup from Sep 19 (from before your disk cleanup).
  2. That backup is very large (over 1.5 million files). Every time we try to restore it onto a new computer, it runs out of space about two thirds of the way through, even after we gave it a much larger disk.
  3. We have retried this many times over the past few days, and it fails the same way every time. We do not see a way to make it fit in the near term.

Are you okay with us resetting it to a clean computer? You would be able to update normally again afterwards.

Yes, please reset it to a clean computer — I understand the old files will be lost.

One question before you do: does the reset only wipe the Agent Computer itself? Will my bots, chat history, memories, connectors, and settings carry over?

Hey @warpdev, thanks for confirming.

Yes, the reset only should only affect Grok Bot’s Computer itself. Your bots, chat history, memories, routines, connectors, and settings are stored separately on our side, so they should all carry over.

What goes away is what lived on the computer: files and folders saved on it, installed apps and packages, and any websites you were signed into in the computer’s browser (you’ll need to sign in to those again). If an older chat points to a file that was saved on the computer, that file won’t open anymore.

The reset was completed—please let us know if you can access Grok Bot now!

Hi Colin, thanks — the stuck ‘Backup not ready’ indicator is gone after the reset. But the Grok Bot desktop gets stuck on ‘Desktop starting’ and never finishes; after a while it shows ‘Cannot connect’. The new computer doesn’t seem to come online. Could you check the backend state?
