Agree, the UX is terrible. Not everyone just blindly keeps prompting AI to write code (even though that seems to be the mainstream way to use AI editors). It makes me want to punch my laptop every time I see the “agent” starting to mess up my code when I just want to ask a question.
I even hope I can remove the so called agent entirely from Cursor. At least at this moment I don’t feel any model is good enough to be an agent if you’re working on a serious project.
+1
And why is even ask mode doing searches and looking for things as if its in agent mode? Old codebase context was much better.
+1. Restore it quickly please
It’s the worst! Makes this almost useless. It used to work much better.
This change is incredibly annoying. When I use the shortcut for “chat”, I am obviously not referring to agent mode. It even shows in the drop-down that CTRL+L is for “ask”, and CTRL+I is for “agent”. So why is CTRL+L opening agent?
It’s been four days of users regularly asking for this change to be reverted. It should take about five minutes and two lines of code to fix.
This feels like how PayPal would “helpfully” default you to the pay-over-time option in the past.
Ask mode is the entire reason I use Cursor. Literally the one feature I want, and now it’s annoying to use.
+1, please add option to change
Why was this even removed?
I rolled back to 0.45 until this is fixed
+1 … also I preferred the old colors on changes.
also, it seems that sometimes I can’t reapply a change if it fails or I picked the wrong file. Like when opening a file directly from an FTP server. It looses context.
@abc How do I roll back?
Agreed, please let us change the default.
+1
PLEASE do not force me to use agent mode i only need ask mode
Thanks to this update, I am looking for a replacement. I hate Agent Mode. Do not force me to use it.
Same. Cursor is completely unusable. It spits out so much utter garbage it can’t even do the simplest of things.
I don’t believe there is a direct option to set “Ask” as the default mode. Maybe by changing the settings or asking the devs if they can add it? Otherwise, a small script could perhaps force this mode when the chat is opened.
+1 bring back ask as a default.
Any updates on this? Should be a very simple and quick update.
I think 0.46.9 mitigates this inconvenience:
Patches
- 0.46.9: Memory and performances fixes, composer/chat remembers your last mode selection, http/1.1 support for agent/chat, linux python env vars fixed, cursorignore fixes
Quote from: Changelog | Cursor - The AI Code Editor
Every time I press cmd+l it has the file from before in its context but not the currently/newly opened one that I want to act on. Is this normal?
I created an account here just to tell you that this new behaviour is atrocious. I hate it so, so, so much. It’s so lame, I’m sorry, but it’s wasting so much of my time. I’m disgusted that I paid for these completely stupid agents.
This would be my top requested change to the app. I never want to use Agent. And I’m tired of starting a request, realizing it’s the Agent, canceling it (paying for it), switching to Ask, and starting again.
