How can I change default Chat mode as Ask, not Agent

Hey, now you can change this in the Cursor settings.

Thanks @deanrie ! And now future people who do a web search to see if this setting exists will see your post

I’ve noticed that when opening a project for the first time or reloading the window, the default display is still agent mode, regardless of whether I set the default mode for new conversations to agent or ask. This is somewhat frustrating, and I don’t know if this is a bug or a ā€œfeatureā€ (lol).

Pretty sure it’s a feature, lol. Clearing the cache might help.

ā€œWhen I set the default mode to ā€˜ask’, it only applies when starting a new conversation. But if I reload the window or restart the editor, it reverts to ā€˜agent’ mode. Isn’t that strange? Why not allow the editor to open directly in ā€˜ask’ mode?ā€

This new ā€œfeatureā€ of being able to set the default mode is pretty much useless. If it doesn’t actual pay attention to those settings when starting a new chat, what is the point? Does the definition of ā€œdefaultā€ mean nothing?

You need to be able to set the chat mode to ask and have it respect the setting. This has caused a lot of wasted time.

This issue was fixed and the fix was removed a while back. Is there any reason why?

Many devs including myself don’t trust agent mode to make changes on our behalf and always use the ā€˜ask’ function. It’s really annoying having to switch this in every new chat.

I have the same issue. Do we know if there’s an open bug for this issue, so we can expect a fix ?

same issue, still for months. seems like its time to say goodbye to cursor

This issue persists — Cmd + Shift + L still opens a new chat in Agent mode, ignoring the Default Mode configuration :frowning:

This is incredibly annoying. As someone who is typically using this by default to explore, always having to switch to Ask (and sometimes forgetting and enduring undesired code changes), it’s kind of hard to believe I can’t control this behavior.
