Is there any indication within Cursor when Fable 5 falls back to Opus 4.8?
On some of my runs, I suspect it’s falling back to Opus, but there’s literally no indication. Can someone from the team help me understand how this works in cursor?

Hey good question. When you pick Fable 5, requests go to Anthropic, and they have a safety mechanism. Prompts that their system flags as potentially unsafe get automatically routed to Opus 4.8. That’s an Anthropic decision, not Cursor’s, and it can happen even in the middle of a reply.
There isn’t a separate indicator in the editor that says “this reply went to Opus” right now. The switch happens inside Anthropic, and in Cursor the request still shows as Fable 5. Where you can actually see it is in the usage or billing breakdown. Opus 4.8 activity will show up there next to Fable 5 usage.
On billing, no need to worry. You pay Fable 5 rates for the part Fable did, and Opus 4.8 rates for the part Opus did. There’s no extra charge. The team confirmed this here: Claude Fable 5 - Out Now! - #17 by Colin
I’ve logged a request for an explicit indicator for this kind of switch. You’re not the first user to ask. Let me know if you’ve got any other questions.
