Lost Chat History After Forced Re-Login – “No composer data handle found” Error

Where does the bug appear (feature/product)?

Cursor IDE

Describe the Bug

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using Cursor for several months without any major issues, but tonight something strange happened. The chat suddenly stopped responding and displayed a message about a VPN — I’m not on a VPN, and my internet connection was fine. i have more than ample storage space north of 1Tb free.

I closed and restarted the app as I normally do, but when it reopened, it unexpectedly asked me to log in again. After signing in, all my project files reloaded, but my most recent chat session disappeared from history.

Normally (since the recent update), when I reopen Cursor it starts a new chat, and I can go to History to reopen the one I was working on. But after this forced re-login, that chat no longer appears. Only a few older chats are visible, and when I click them, it just says “Loading chat…” forever.

Now, only one old chat from months ago and a new blank chat window are showing.
The console also shows this error:

[composer] No composer data handle found

This is a major problem — I’ve been working on a specific project using that chat and now I’m completely stuck. Has anyone run into this or found a fix? Clearing cache and restarting didn’t help.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, thanks for the report, and sorry you ran into this.

This matches a known bug in the Agent Window beta. A fix is confirmed for Cursor v1.8 to prevent it in the future.

Unfortunately, once this bug triggers, lost chats can’t be recovered.

If you have backups:

  • If you have backups of %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\globalStorage\state.vscdb or %APPDATA%\Cursor\User\workspaceStorage, close Cursor and replace those files to try restoring some history.

Going forward:

  • Use Export Chat regularly for important conversations
  • Consider the SpecStory extension for automatic exports
  • Keep regular backups of the folders above

Getting the same problem here. Is there any way to load the chat? For me it’s stuck on “Loading Chat”

I just ran into this issue a couple days ago after the last update. All chats are unavailable (loading chat forever) and when I try to access history I get this error: [composer] No composer data handle found

I can start new chats, but had some good info in the historic ones

Just received this today! What the hell is going on with the development of this product. This happened in 2.1.48 as well so doesnt appear to have been fixed in 1.8 as the cursor devs said above

this bug still exits in version 2.2.20 when I update today。 my chats history is gone with no backup :sob:

exactly they force update and a huge problem like this happens and they dont do anything about it. its becoming like every money loving company now. they just get ur money and dont care anymore. i contacted support for this and they hit me with a fast reply that theres nothing they can do about it and then pass me to another member which god knows when they are going to respond. SMFH this is outrageous

Happened to me as well, system weirdly reset itself (Which I am presuming was a forced update as when it booted up again it told me there is no new update which I had purposely avoided due to these issues), asked me to log in and now I get the dreaded “Loading Chat” message.

As much as the program has helped me, it has also hindered me, im not only a pro user, but also been spending over $500 additionally a month…which I know is pocket change to them considering they just raised $2.3b, but history teaches you that companies need to invest in customer service (It doesnt take alot to add it to a bug list or acknowledge you are looking into it)

This is one or several “chat” issues in the last couple of months - Chat stuck on “Loading Chat” — cannot access previous conversation - #91 by damefix

I think Cursor needs to understand its their customers they need to speak with, just spend some of that money on a couple of community support people that can then liaise issues with the devs.

Also please stop with the sometimes twice daily updates…..this has also wiped out my chats and cost me money.
